The HTC pretreatment increased surface oxygen‐containing groups (‐COOH or C=O, ‐OH), which was adsorption sites to promote Cu2+ adsorption. Chemical adsorption was the predominant mechanism. The adsorption interactions include ion exchange, electrostatic effect, surface complexation and cation‐π interaction.
