Bite force measurements with hard and soft bite surfaces

Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, 2013
SummaryBite force has been measured by different methods and over a wide variety of designs. In several instruments, the fact that bite surface has been manufactured with stiff materials might interfere in obtaining reliable data, by a more prompt activation of inhibitory reflex mechanisms. The purpose of this study was to compare the maximum voluntary

Bite force and state of dentition

Acta Odontologica Scandinavica, 1977
The maximal bite force and the strength of the finger-thumb grip of 125 Skolt Lapps, aged 15 to 65, was measured with a specially devised apparatus. The bite force was measured with the biting fork placed between the first molars and between the incisors, respectively.

Bite force in children with bruxism

Acta Odontologica Scandinavica, 1973
The bite force of 51 twelve-year-old bruxists was compared with that of a control group of the same age, in order to establish whether bruxism affects bite force and whether there is any connection between the degree of tooth abrasion and bite force.

Estimating human incisal bite forces from the electromyogram/bite-force function

Archives of Oral Biology, 1994
This study used the electromyogram (EMG)/force-function curve as a means of estimating functional bite forces. Surface EMG recordings were made for the masseter and anterior temporalis muscles bilaterally in ten adults while incisal bite forces were measured using a force transducer embedded in custom-made hydroplastic bite blocks.

Forces acting on the mandible during bilateral static bite at different bite force levels

Journal of Biomechanics, 1980
Abstract A mathematical model based on an assumed linear relationship between the forces exerted by a muscle and its integrated electromyogram is presented for calculating muscle forces and joint forces acting on the human mandible during static bite situations.

Pathologic attrition and maximal bite force

Journal of Oral Rehabilitation, 1985
SummaryThe maximal bite force was recorded between antagonizing anterior teeth in a group (n= 10) of patients with pathologic attrition and in a control group. No statistically significant difference between the maximal bite forces was recorded. Also, the effect on the maximal bite force of the continuous wearing of a partial bite raising splint for 4 ...

An instrument for the measurement of incisive bite force

Journal of Dentistry, 1973
Abstract The various types of gnathodynamometers described in the literature have been considered in terms of use in the intact dentition. None was found suitable. A gnathodynamometer is described for use in monitoring the bite force of the human intact dentition.

Bite Force and Occlusion

Seminars in Orthodontics, 2006
Maximum bite force is a useful indicator of the functional state of the masticatory system and the loading of the teeth, and its recordings can be performed in a relatively simple way in the clinic. However, because maximum bite-force levels vary with method, sex and age, it is important that the measurements are compared against the appropriate ...

A novel bite force recorder and maximal isometric bite force values for healthy young adults

European Journal of Oral Sciences, 1993
Human bite forces have been studied with several types of equipment, and the maximal values reported have varied greatly. In the present study, a new bite force recorder was developed to measure human bite forces. When measuring maximal bite force, the mandible is, laterally and sagittally, almost in the intercuspal position, while the vertical opening

Tooth Loss and Biting Force in Man

Journal of Dental Research, 1973
Changes in the biting force of a group of patients who underwent immediate denture treatment are reported for a period of four years. Force increased with time and was independent of dental state. After two years the average biting force approached that recorded for dentate individuals.
