The Better to Eat You With: Bite Force in the Naked Mole-Rat (Heterocephalus glaber) Is Stronger Than Predicted Based on Body Size [PDF]

open access: yesFrontiers in Integrative Neuroscience, 2019
Naked mole-rats (Heterocephalus glaber) are subterranean rodents that utilize their incisors for feeding, chisel-tooth digging of complex tunnel systems, social interactions, and defense in their eusocial colony structure.

Autogenous self‐healing of concrete: Experimental design and test methodsA review

open access: yesEngineering Reports, Volume 5, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
Concrete exhibits an intrinsic ability to heal cracks, defined as “autogenous self‐healing.” However, despite code restrictions, autogenous self‐healing of concrete shows limited effectiveness in practice. This indicates the need for further research to provide engineers with reliable design rules.

Employee experience –the missing link for engaging employees: Insights from an MNE's AI‐based HR ecosystem

open access: yesHuman Resource Management, Volume 62, Issue 1, Page 97-115, January/February 2023., 2023
Abstract Analyzing multiple data sources from a global information technology (IT) consulting multinational enterprise (MNE), this research unpacks the configuration of a digitalized HR ecosystem of artificial intelligence(AI)‐assisted human resource management (HRM) applications and HR platforms.

Cohomology of moduli spaces of Del Pezzo surfaces

open access: yesMathematische Nachrichten, Volume 296, Issue 1, Page 80-101, January 2023., 2023
Abstract We compute the rational Betti cohomology groups of the coarse moduli spaces of geometrically marked Del Pezzo surfaces of degree 3 and 4 as representations of the Weyl groups of the corresponding root systems. The proof uses a blend of methods from point counting over finite fields and techniques from arrangement complements.

Pinch-off dynamics to describe animal lapping [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. Fluids 6, 073102 (2021), 2021
Some carnivorous mammals (e.g., cats and dogs) lap water with their tongues to drink water at high frequencies. Such a fast moving tongue creates a liquid column out of a bath which is bitten by the mouth for drinking. Presumably, the animals bite just before the pinch-off time of the water column to maximize the water intake.

Design of a high‐performance advanced phase locked loop with high stability external loop filter

open access: yesIET Circuits, Devices &Systems, Volume 17, Issue 1, Page 1-12, January 2023., 2023
Abstract For this task, an improved phase locked loop (PLL) was developed using a more sophisticated phase‐frequency detector with multiband flexible dividers that provide enhanced frequency resolution, a better spectrum, and a better output signal. Great timing jitter was the problem for the old PLL designs because of the unbalanced frequency transfer

Understanding the gender gap in advanced practice nursing: A qualitative study

open access: yesJournal of Nursing Management, Volume 30, Issue 8, Page 4480-4490, November 2022., 2022
Abstract Aims We aim to explore the perceptions of registered nurses undergoing the advanced practice nurse preparatory programme and of advanced practice nurses towards the recruitment of men into the advanced practice nursing workforce. Background Given the need to expand and diversify the advanced practice nursing workforce, it is important to ...

The Reibergram for immunoglobulin A in dogs: Evaluation of intrathecal IgA synthesis using a quotient graph in dogs with neurological diseases

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, Volume 37, Issue 1, Page 191-203, January/February 2023., 2023
Abstract Background Increased cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) protein concentration is a common finding in neurological diseases of dogs. Distinguishing between intrathecally‐produced proteins and proteins that have passed the blood‐CSF barrier because of barrier disruption facilitates diagnosis.

Optimality justifications and the optimality principle: New tools for foundation‐theoretic epistemology

open access: yesNoûs, Volume 56, Issue 4, Page 972-999, December 2022., 2022
Abstract The background of this paper (section 1) consists in a new account to foundation‐theoretic epistemology characterized by two features: (i) All beliefs are to be justified by deductive, inductive or abductive inferences from a minimalistic class of unproblematic (introspective or analytic) basic beliefs.

Atomic Ordering in Cubic Bismuth Telluride Alloy Phases at High Pressure [PDF]

open access: yesPhys. Rev. B 93, 224109 (2016), 2016
Pressure-induced transitions from ordered intermetallic phases to substitutional alloys to semi-ordered phases were studied in a series of bismuth tellurides. Using angle-dispersive x-ray diffraction, the compounds Bi4Te5, BiTe, and Bi2Te were observed to form alloys with the disordered body-centered cubic (bcc) crystal structure upon compression to ...
