Abstract The cities of Bithynia, seen from Rome or Greece, seem to belong to a marginal world. Integrated into the imperium Romanum in 74 bc, they had a particular destiny under the empire: more than others marked institutionally by the mark of Rome (the lex Pompeia), their societies were real cultural melting pots.
