Bacillus thuringiensis: Laboratory tests against four species of biting lice (mallophaga: Trichodectidae)

Journal of Invertebrate Pathology, 1974
Abstract Four species of mammalian biting lice, Bovicola bovis, B. crassipes, B. limbata, and B. ovis, were more susceptible in the laboratory to the spore-δ-endotoxin complex of Bacillus thuringiensis than to the β-exotoxin. The relative potency of these active principles was thus reversed from that for avian biting lice.

Piercing Mouth-Parts in the Biting Lice (Mallophaga)

Nature, 1949
THE Mallophaga, ectoparasites of birds and mammals, are distinguished within the order Phthiraptera (containing also the Anoplura and Haematomyzus) chiefly by their relatively unspecialized mouth-parts, especially in having heavily sclerotized chewing mandibles.

Persistence of the activity of topical ivermectin against biting lice ( Bovicola bovis )

Veterinary Record, 1998
To assess the persistence of the activity of topical ivermectin against a natural challenge with biting lice ( Bovicola bovis ), 90 mixed‐breed cattle that had been treated to remove lice, were blocked by bodyweight within sex and randomly allocated to three treatments: untreated control ...

Spatial distribution and spread of sheep biting lice, Bovicola ovis, from point infestations

Veterinary Parasitology, 1999
The spatial distribution of chewing lice (Bovicola ovis) on their hosts was examined in Polypay and Columbia ewes initially artificially infested on the midside or the neck. Densities of lice were determined at 69 body sites in eight body regions at approximately monthly intervals for 2 years.

Connections between poultry biting lice and microflora.

Angewandte Parasitologie, 1984
Microorganisms were found in about 300 Mallophaga ( Menopon gallinae, Eomenacanthus stramineus , Goniocotes gallinae) and 11 host hens. The majority of isolated bacteria was determined as grampositive cocci. The microflora found on the surface of and inside the Mallophaga as well as in the samples of hen's skin did not exhibit significant qualitative ...

Sensitivity of two-stage sampling to detect sheep biting lice (Bovicola ovis) in infested flocks

Veterinary Parasitology, 2002
The sampling distribution of Bovicola ovis (Schrank) on sheep was examined in two flocks, one with a light and one with a heavy infestation of lice. The derived distributions were used to calculate the sensitivity of detecting lice on individual sheep and in flocks by fleece parting regimes that varied in number of parts per animal and number of sheep ...

Sheep Ectoparasite Control. I. Insecticides and Application Methods for Keds and Biting Lice

Journal of Economic Entomology, 1967
Effectiveness of insecticides and application methods was evaluated by ability to eradicate sheep ked, Melophagus ovinus (L.), and sheep biting louse, Bovicola ovis (L.), from farm flocks, criterion being absence for at least 1 year following treatment.
