An analytical approach to a classification of the Bivalvia
Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. B, Biological Sciences, 1978A scheme of classification should depend on many organ systems, not on one. How should this be achieved, resolving conflict between different bodies of evidence? In the Treatise on invertebrate paleontology (vols N 1-N 3) special importance was apparently attached to one feature, the ...

Periostracum in Palaeozoic Bivalvia?
Nature Physical Science, 1972PERIOSTRACUM (a proteinous protective layer covering the outside of many molluscs) has been found in Early Palaeozoic Bivalvia from the Silurian of the Barrandian (Central Bohemia). Although the organic substances in the periostracum layer have mostly been changed into inorganic material, the thickness and outer surface micromorphology of periostracum ...

Molecular evidence on the evolution of the Bivalvia [PDF]
Abstract Despite widespread agreement on the monophyly of several major taxa of bivalves, others remain uncertain and the relationships among them are debated. The present study compares new and published morphological phylogenies with new analyses based on 18S gene sequences. All but one family and all superfamilies in the Bivalvia

Bivalvia—A Discussion of Known Unknowns*
American Malacological Bulletin, 2013Abstract. Bivalves share many of the “deeper” questions with the other molluscan groups - issues such as their origin and sister-group relationships within the Mollusca, and their suitability to explore molecular data in a “known” fossil framework.

Significance of the ligament in the classification of the Bivalvia
Philosophical Transactions of the Royal Society of London. B, Biological Sciences, 1978This survey, based throughout on knowledge of the epithelia which secrete the various regions of the primary ligament and also their periostracal extensions sometimes resulting in the formation of separate secondary ligaments, provides evidence in justification of the following: (1) Union of the Carditacea and ...

The Microstructures of the Biomineralized Bivalvia Shells
MRS Proceedings, 1989AbstractThe paper presents the detailed study of the structural features of the biomineralized bivalvia shells. The Cristaria plicata(Leach), Anodonta woodianal(Lea) and Lamprotula Leai(Gray) are selected as the prototype in the present study. Scanning electron microscope (SEM), X-ray diffraction, laser Raman spectroscope and electron spectroscopy for ...

Annotated checklist of the marine Bivalvia of Rodrigues
Journal of Natural History, 2004This checklist illustrates and comments on the 109 species of marine bivalve currently known from Rodrigues. The fauna appears impoverished when compared to those of Mauritius, Reunion and Seychelles. Low habitat diversity is postulated as the cause of impoverishment rather than the relatively young geological age of Rodrigues.
