Distinct Microstructural Characteristic Lengths Defining Notch Fatigue Crack Initiation and Propagation, and Defect Tolerance in Advanced Steels

open access: yesAdvanced Engineering Materials, EarlyView.
Schematic representation of modes of microcrack nucleation, growth and temporary arrestment at different boundaries, with the criteria for crack propagation in three scenarios: (1) large notch, (2) defect/small sharp notch, and (3) long crack. This work revisits and integrates results on the fatigue behavior of advanced bainitic steels (in particular ...

Optoelectronic Synaptic Devices Using Molecular Telluride Phase‐Change Inks for Three‐Factor Learning

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Optoelectronic synaptic devices based on solution‐processed molecular telluride GST‐225 phase‐change inks are demonstrated for three‐factor learning. A global optical signal broadcast through a silicon waveguide induces non‐volatile conductance updates exclusively in locally electrically flagged memristors.

Toward a Live(d) Black World for Black Children

open access: yesJournal of Childhood Studies
This review of Amari Johnson’s Under a Black Star examines his autoethnographic account of the BlackStar community in New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina. Johnson reframes marronage away from overdetermined focus on escape and instead as pursuit

The Impact of Ethnic-Immigrant Status and Obesity-Related Risk Factors on Behavioral Problems among US Children and Adolescents

open access: yesScientifica, 2012
We examined the prevalence and correlates of parent-reported behavioral problems among immigrants and US-born children aged 6–17 years. The 2007 National Survey of Children’s Health was used to develop an 11-item factor-based behavioral problems index ...

Intelligent Orthopedics: Machine Learning in Diagnosis of Bone Disease, Implants, and Bone Health Monitoring

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
Efficient recovery from traumatic or degenerative diseases is a great challenge, even after all the advancements in bone and cartilage regeneration. Machine learning (ML) algorithms have presented opportunities to enhance these aspects by accurately analyzing imaging data.

Engineered Microvascular Model of the Blood–Brain–Tumor Barrier Reveals Endothelial Remodeling in Diffuse Midline Glioma

open access: yesAdvanced Healthcare Materials, EarlyView.
We developed a patient‐derived, functional microfluidic model of the diffuse midline glioma (DMG) blood–brain–tumor barrier (BBTB) comprised of endothelial cells, astrocytes, pericytes, and tumor cells. The system forms perfusable microvasculature, reveals the BBTB retains vascular integrity, identifies DMG‐specific transcriptomic changes distinct from
