Problematizing Competence in Clinical Legal Education: What do we mean by competence and how do we assess non-skill competencies?

open access: yesInternational Journal of Clinical Legal Education, 2016
The special issue of this journal is about problematizing assessment. However, in this article I want to start further back and problematize what is meant by competence.

Receiving an on the spot penalty: A Tale of Morality, Common-sense and Law-abidance [PDF]

open access: yes
This article examines citizens’ reactions to being issued with an on the spot penalty and the consequences this has for holding a law-abiding identity. Using mundane examples of statutory requirements regulating everyday life (motoring), it is found that

Unsupervised Hierarchical Symbolic Regression for Interpretable Property Modeling in Complex Multi‐Variable Systems

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
UHSR translates complex chemical behavior into clear and explainable equations. Applied to thin‐layer chromatography, it automatically uncovers the mathematical rules linking a molecule's structure to its polarity. This approach matches the accuracy of advanced AI while providing interpretable results, earning greater trust from chemists. The method is

Black Hole–Halo Mass Relation from UNIONS Weak Lensing

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
This Letter presents, for the first time, direct constraints on the black hole–halo mass relation using weak gravitational-lensing measurements. We construct type I and type II active galactic nucleus (AGN) samples from the Sloan Digital Sky Survey, with

EU Environmental Law in the Digital Age: A Critical Outlook on the Twin Transition’s Legal Structure

open access: yesEuropean Journal of Risk Regulation
The European Union (EU) has embraced the “twin transition” – the simultaneous pursuit of digitalisation and ecological transformation – as a cornerstone of its industrial policy.

(Compactified) black branes in four dimensional f(R)-gravity

open access: yes, 2017
A new family of analytical solutions in a four dimensional static spacetime is presented for $f\left( R\right) $-gravity. In contrast to General Relativity, we find that a non trivial black string/ring solution is supported in vacuum power law $f\left( R\

Quantification of Single‐Cell Cysteine Using an Electrochemical Nanosensor for Predicting Tumor Disulfidptosis Susceptibility

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
Cysteine attracts interest due to its unique electrochemical activity and emerging relationship with disulfidptosis. This study develops a new electrochemical nanosensor, which represents the first of its kind capable of detecting intracellular cysteine for various types of tumor cells and primary tumor cells in mice to evaluate disulfidptosis ...

Ultrahigh‐Linear Bio‐Inspired Janus Elastomeric Strain Sensor with High Sensitivity and Stretchability via Surface Wrinkle Engineering

open access: yesAdvanced Science, EarlyView.
A bio‐inspired Micro‐wrinkled Janus elastomeric flexible strain sensor mimicking wrinkled‐leaf viburnum is developed. Endowed with a synergistic sensing mechanism including wrinkle‐guided microcracks, modulus‐gradient‐driven strain division, and a parallel conductive circuit, it achieves ultra‐high linearity, sensitivity, wide strain range, and ...

Triage and the Israel-Palestine Conflict

open access: yesVoices in Bioethics, 2016
Medical tourism widens the sphere of available medical care beyond a single country’s borders. Patients who voluntarily leave their home country to seek treatment in other countries typically do so out of perceived medical necessity; these procedures ...

3D investigation and modeling of the geometric effects on porosity in packed beds

open access: yesAIChE Journal, EarlyView.
Abstract In porous beds, physical boundaries restrict particle arrangement, leading to inhomogeneous porosity. This paper reports on the porosity profiles that are the result of geometric effects on monodisperse packed beds in cylindrical and cubic arrangements. Special focus is given to the influence of edges and corners in cubic geometries.
