RECENT STUDIES ON SOURCES AND SINKS OF METHANE IN THE BLACK SEA
2006This study focuses on the influence of gas seepage on methane sources and sinks, aerobic and anaerobic oxidation of methane and the mediating microbial organisms in the Black Sea. We present data from two cruises that took place in 2001 and 2003. Seven stations (two from the shelf, four from the upper and lower slope, and one from the central basin ...

GIS for Regional Seas Programmes: A Case Study: The Black Sea
1999The Geographic Information System (GIS) has become a valuable tool for management of environmental resources. Recent applications to the marine realm have shown how a variety of diverse types of information can be presented simply and clearly, bringing together political, social, economic, scientific and management data in a visual format.

A Study of Oil Biodegradation in the Black Sea Water
Water Resources, 2003A laboratory study was conducted to examine oil biodegradation in the presence of a fouling organism community. It is shown that the majority of fouling species exhibit relatively weak tolerance to oil. Oil degradation in seawater is shown to proceed quicker and more completely in the presence of the fouling organism community than it does without such

Mean Sea Level and Sea Level Variation Studies in the Black Sea and the Aegean
2005An analysis on the use of ERS1, ERS2 and TOPEX/Poseidon (T/P) data for the determination of a Mean Sea Surface (MSS) model in the Black Sea and the Aegean is presented. From all three satellites, the Exact Repeat Mission (ERM) data have been used spanning over a period of 12 years.

Seasonal Dynamics of the System Sea-Strait: Black Sea–Bosphorus Case Study
Estuarine, Coastal and Shelf Science, 2002Abstract The seasonal behaviour of the Black Sea–Bosphorus system is studied. The one-and-a-half-dimensional model of the Black Sea is used. It describes the level and thermohaline structure changes of the sea. A one-layer sub-model is used for the shallow Azov Sea.

Case Studies of Optical Remote Sensing in the Barents Sea, Black Sea and Caspian Sea
2008Examples of variability of the bio-optical characteristics in the Barents, Black and Caspian Seas derived from SeaWiFS data in 1998- 2005 are presented and analyzed. A common feature of these seas is high freshwater inflow, all of the seas are classified with Case 2 waters.

Black Sea Methane and Marine Biota (Case Study)
2020This chapter represents a case study that reviews research into the relationship between meiobenthos distribution and concentrations of hydrocarbon gases (HG), primarily methane, in the sediments of the northwestern part of the Black Sea, including gases released by mud volcanoes and gas seeps.
