Bladder exstrophy is a very rare congenital malformation in which the anterior wall of the bladder is absent, and the posterior wall is exposed externally. The differential diagnosis includes omphalocele, gastroschisis, and cloacal exstrophy. Ultrasound and Doppler examinations are the main diagnostic tools.

Duplicate exstrophy of the bladder
Duplicate exstrophy of the bladder is a rare, distinct congenital anomaly without additional major anomalies of the urinary tract. A 15-year-old boy with duplicate exstrophy is reported on, and the possible role of bladder sequestration in the development of classical musculoskeletal deformities in this anomaly is discussed.

In the literature it is possible to find many case reports of bladder exstrophy variants, although a thorough classification with all possible associated malformations is not yet available. On the basis of a rare case observed at their Department, the authors studied the embryology of these conditions and their associated malformations.

Epidemiological Survey of 214 Families With Bladder Exstrophy-Epispadias Complex
PURPOSE: We sought to identify causative nongenetic and genetic risk factors for the bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex. MATERIALS AND METHODS: A total of 237 families with the bladder exstrophy-epispadias complex were invited to participate in the ...

Abstract A 20-year experience with the management of exstrophy of the bladder is presented. Follow-up data from 27 patients indicate that cystoplasty is a satisfactory operation since half of the older patients developed urinary continence with a normal upper urinary tract.

Exstrophy of the bladder is the most common of a spectrum of related anomalies. The pelvic skeletal changes in all of these disorders vary in degree but are similar in type. The kidneys are urinary collecting systems are usually normal in patients with untreated exstrophy, and the "hurley" appearance of the lower ureters should be regarded as a ...

Embryology of bladder exstrophy
Journal of Pediatric Surgery, 1988A hypothesis in respect to the teratogenesis of bladder exstrophy and its variants is offered. The central feature of this hypothesis is the abnormal persistence of the caudal position of the insertion of the body stalk on the embryo. As a consequence of this, the normal advance and interposition of mesenchymal tissue to the midline becomes impossible.
