Compressor Blade Tip Timing Using Capacitance Tip Clearance Probes

Volume 1: Turbo Expo 2003, 2003
Turbomachinery blade vibrations of sufficient amplitude cause High Cycle Fatigue, which reduces blade life. In order to observe this vibration a non-intrusive monitoring system is sought. The vibration can be detected by measuring blade tip timing since in the presence of vibration the blade timing will differ slightly from the passing time calculated ...

Turbine Blade Tip Clearance Measurement Instrumentation

Volume 1: Turbo Expo 2007, 2007
New and future gas turbine engines are being required to provide greater thrust with improved efficiency, while simultaneously reducing life cycle operating costs. Improved component capabilities enable active control methods to provide better control of engine operation with reduced margin.

Tip clearance optical measurement for rotating blades

MSIE 2011, 2011
The radial tip clearance of engine blades is the distance of blade tip to casing, and the usual clearance is about 1–2mm. Generally there are many electromagnetic interferences in clearance environment, so the paper adopts an optical-fiber sensor to measure the tip clearance while the blades are rotating from lowest speed to the highest speed.

Optical Probe for Monitoring Blade Tip Clearance

47th AIAA Aerospace Sciences Meeting including The New Horizons Forum and Aerospace Exposition, 2009
The reduction of blade tip clearance in high pressure turbine (HPT) and high pressure compressor (HPC) engines, defined as the void between a blade tip and the surrounding casing, has been a subject of intense research since the inception of the gas turbine engine.
