Blade Tips - Clearance and Its Control [PDF]

open access: yesMechanical Engineering, 2013
This article focuses on studying blade tip clearance phenomena. It is important to realize that to be freely turning, a blade (or a cantilevered stator) must have a clearance gap between its tip and the engine casing (or hub). Such clearances introduce aerodynamic losses, decreasing gas turbine efficiency.

Study on flow characteristics of leakage in the last stage inner blade tip clearance of steam turbine

open access: yesAIP Advances, 2023
Internal steam leakage in steam turbines from the high-pressure side to the low-pressure side through clearances causes loss, resulting in reduced efficiency and potentially compromising the safe operation of the turbine.

Effects of Tip Leakage Flow on the Aerodynamic Performance and Stability of an Axial-Flow Transonic Compressor Stage

open access: yesEnergies, 2021
To explain the effect of tip leakage flow on the performance of an axial-flow transonic compressor, the compressors with different rotor tip clearances were studied numerically. The results show that as the rotor tip clearance increases, the leakage flow

Energy Performance and Radial Force of a Mixed-Flow Pump with Symmetrical and Unsymmetrical Tip Clearances

open access: yesEnergies, 2017
The energy performance and radial force of a mixed flow pump with symmetrical and unsymmetrical tip clearance are investigated in this paper. As the tip clearance increases, the pump head and efficiency both decrease.

Research on the Influence of Tip Clearance of Axial-Flow Pump on Energy Characteristics under Pump and Turbine Conditions

open access: yesMachines, 2022
In order to study the influence of tip clearance on the performance and energy dissipation of the axial-flow pump and the axial-flow pump as a turbine, and find the location of high dissipation rate, this study took an axial-flow pump model as its ...

Active Flow Control for Passage Vortex Reduction in a Linear Turbine Cascade with Various Tip Clearance Sizes Using a Dielectric Barrier Discharge Plasma Actuator

open access: yesAerospace, 2023
In an axial-flow turbine of a jet engine used for aircraft propulsion, the passage vortex (PV) and tip leakage vortex (TLV) generated inside the blade passage deteriorate the aerodynamic performance.

Tubomachinery blade vibration amplitude measurement through tip timing with capacitance tip clearance probes [PDF]

open access: yesSensors and Actuators A: Physical, 2005
Abstract Turbomachinery blade vibrations can cause high cycle fatigue (HCF), which reduces blade life. In order to observe this vibration a non-intrusive monitoring system is sought. The vibration can be detected by measuring blade tip timing since in the presence of vibration the blade timing will differ slightly from the passing time calculated ...

Energy Performance and Flow Patterns of a Mixed-Flow Pump with Different Tip Clearance Sizes

open access: yesEnergies, 2017
Tip clearance between blade end and shroud is inevitable in pump operation and of great importance on pump energy performance and pressure fluctuation. As the tip clearance size increases, the head and efficiency of the mixed flow pump drop accordingly ...

Leakage Flow Characteristics in Blade Tip of Shaft Tubular Pump

open access: yesJournal of Marine Science and Engineering, 2023
The shaft tubular pump device is widely used in various water diversion projects because of its ultra-low head and large flow characteristics. Due to the tip clearance between the blade and the shroud, it is easy to cause hydraulic mechanical performance

Influence of the Tip Clearance on the Aeroelastic Characteristics of a Last Stage Steam Turbine

open access: yesApplied Sciences, 2019
In this paper, the tip clearance effects on the aeroelastic stability of a last-stage steam turbine model are investigated. Most of the unsteady aerodynamic work contributing to flutter of the long blades of the last-stage of a steam turbine is done near
