Validation of muscle oxygenation kinetics to predict aerobic fitness and exercise transition thresholds

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract The aim of this study was to validate previously developed equations to predict maximal oxygen uptake (V̇O2max${\dot V_{{{\mathrm{O}}_{\mathrm{2}}}{\mathrm{max}}}}$) from near‐infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) during and after a period of limb ischaemia.

Optimal timing to assess exercise‐induced oxidative stress: A systematic review and meta‐analysis

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract There is a lack of consensus on optimal timing to assess redox biomarkers post‐exercise, limiting methodological standardisation and linking oxidative stress to physiology. We determined optimal post‐exercise oxidative stress assessment times using three redox biomarkers: glutathione, F2‐isoprostanes and protein carbonyls.

Steepest near‐infrared spectroscopy‐derived deoxygenation slopes during arterial occlusions provide more reliable assessments of muscle mitochondrial capacity

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Assessment of near‐infrared spectroscopy (NIRS)‐derived muscle oxidative capacity relies on analysing deoxygenation slopes from NIRS signal versus time curves during brief arterial occlusions, which reflect the rate of post‐exercise recovery of muscle oxygen consumption (V̇O2m${\dot V_{{{\mathrm{O}}_2}{\mathrm{m}}}}$).

Continuous carbon dioxide monitoring in the exhaled breath of mechanically ventilated rats

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract In small animals, carbon dioxide monitoring is either limited by the need to take blood samples for gas analysis, or it interferes with respiratory efficiency and lung mechanics analysis. We introduced a novel approach for continuous monitoring of CO2 in the expiratory limb of the breathing circuit.

Interpreting peripheral oxygen saturation variability in critical illness: A directional framework adjusted for hypoxia severity

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, EarlyView.
Abstract Peripheral oxygen saturation (SpO2${S_{{\mathrm{p}}{{\mathrm{O}}_2}}}$) exhibits a complex pattern of fluctuations during hypoxia, which can be quantified using entropy measures. SpO2${S_{{\mathrm{p}}{{\mathrm{O}}_2}}}$ entropy analysis provides insights into dynamic physiological regulation by non‐invasively reflecting the body's capacity to ...
