Abstract The complete mitochondrial genome (mitogenome) of Periplaneta brunnea was sequenced in this study and used to reconstruct the phylogenetic relationship of Blattodea. The circular mitogenome was 15,604 bp long and exhibited typical gene organization and order, consistent with other sequenced Periplaneta mitogenomes.

ORDER BLATTODEA Three roaches were scanned during the study: the common American cockroach Periplaneta americana, the popular Madagascar hissing cockroach Gromphadorhina portentosa, and Blaptica dubia. The tracheal system of Gromphadorhina has been studied via dissection to determine the physiology of its hissing behavior (Nelson, 1979; Nelson and ...

10 Blattodea Tarsi are fivesegmented. An arolium is present or absent. Tarsomeres 1–4 are usually equipped with euplantulae (Figs 3a,h, 4C). Reduction of adhesive structures occurs often in cavernicolous forms (Roth 1991). The arolium cuticle bears chitinous threads oriented at some angle to the surface (Roth and Willis 1952).
