Spore diversity among species of Blechnaceae in the Atlantic Forest
The palynological diversity of Blechnaceae in the Atlantic Forest was investigated. While the monophyletic family belongs to the group of leptosporangiate ferns, a new classification proposed by recent phylogenetic study reorganizes the family and adds ...

Typification of Blechnum spicant var. fallax Lange (Blechnaceae)
Blechnum spicant var. fallax Lange is a fern taxon endemic to Iceland where it occurs in the vicinity of hot springs on geothermally heated soils. The taxon was first described by a Danish botanist Johan Martin Christian Lange in 1880 on the basis of ...

A metabarcoding protocol targeting two DNA regions to analyze root-associated fungal communities in ferns and lycophytes. [PDF]
Abstract Premise Detailed studies of the fungi associated with lycophytes and ferns provide crucial insights into the early evolution of land plants. However, most investigations to date have assessed fern–fungus interactions based only on visual root inspection. In the present research, we establish and evaluate a metabarcoding protocol to analyze the

Diversity-Elevation Relationships of Vascular Plants in Austral Temperate Ecosystems Are Strata Dependent. [PDF]
We investigated diversity patterns of vascular plants of overstorey and understorey vegetation separately per stratum and the influence of anthropogenic disturbances along two elevational transects with contrasting slope aspects in a temperate rainforest and alpine scrub in southern Chile.

Fires in rainforests: Quantifying litter bed flammability of cool temperate rainforests in eastern Australia. [PDF]
Abstract Premise Rainforests are usually too wet to burn, acting as natural barriers to fire spread and as refuges for biodiversity. However, climate change is increasing the risk of fire incursion into rainforests. Our capacity to manage these impacts is hindered by limited research on rainforest flammability.

Non‐seed plants are emerging gene sources for agriculture and insect control proteins
SUMMARY The non‐seed plants (e.g., charophyte algae, bryophytes, and ferns) have multiple human uses, but their contributions to agriculture and research have lagged behind seed plants. While sharing broadly conserved biology with seed plants and the major crops, non‐seed plants sometimes possess alternative molecular and physiological adaptations ...

Abstract Premise Approximately 14% of all fern species have physiologically active chlorophyllous spores that are much more short‐lived than the more common and dormant achlorophyllous spores. Most chlorophyllous‐spored species (70%) are epiphytes and account for almost 37% of all epiphytic ferns.
