Numerical analysis and optimization of a winglet sweep angle and winglet tip chord for improvement of aircraft flight performance [PDF]

open access: yes, 2022
In this paper, a study of the effect of winglet sweep angle and winglet tip chord of the aircraft wing on the aerodynamics performances and how to improve it are carried out, assuming Cant angle 60°, winglet height = 3.5 m, Toe angle = -5°, and Twist ...

Continuous adjoint‐based shape optimization of a turbomachinery stage using a 3D volumetric parameterization

open access: yesInternational Journal for Numerical Methods in Fluids, Volume 95, Issue 7, Page 1054-1075, July 2023., 2023
A novel turbomachinery oriented volumetric parameterization technique is presented. It employs volumetric NURBS along with a coordinate system transformation, retaining axisymmetry and periodicity. Its combination with a GPU‐accelerated flow and adjoint solver is utilized for the shape optimization of a high‐pressure, transonic, turbine stage rotor ...

A unique case of commensalism: The beaver beetle Platypsyllus castoris (Leiodidae, Coleoptera) and its morphological adaptations

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 284, Issue 1, January 2023., 2023
We document in detail the morphology of adults of the beaver beetle Platypsyllus castoris with modern techniques, and interpret evolutionary changes linked with the specific life style of the beetle in the fur of the beaver. Platypsyllus displays numerous structural specializations which ensure mechanical stabilization, firm anchorage on the host, and ...

Thermohydraulic and Irreversibility Analyses of Swirl Flows Utilizing Distorted Radial Fins: Entropy Generation and Entransy Dissipation Evaluation

open access: yesInternational Journal of Energy Research, Volume 2023, Issue 1, 2023., 2023
The current investigation analyses the convective heat transfer performance, entropy generation, and entransy evaluation of swirl flows generated by distorted radial fins (DRF). As swirl flows and various vortical structures induce large temperature gradients, second law and entransy analyses are necessary to thoroughly evaluate their true ...

The Aerodynamic Characteristics of a Diamond Joined‐Wing Morphing Aircraft

open access: yesInternational Journal of Aerospace Engineering, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
This paper presents a new‐concept aircraft with a diamond joined‐wing morphing configuration, which simultaneously adjusts the sweep angles of both the front wing and rear wings by a telescopic support rod. The compressible Navier‐Stokes equations in the conservative form are solved to analyze the configuration characteristics and the aerodynamic ...

Design Improvement of a BWB Aerodynamic Performance at Cruise and Take‐Off Speeds

open access: yesInternational Journal of Aerospace Engineering, Volume 2022, Issue 1, 2022., 2022
As a high‐performance aircraft, BWB (blended wing body) has attracted the attention of many countries around the world. A 300‐seat BWB design is proposed by the Airplane Concept Design Institute of Northwestern Polytechnical University, which is also called SWB. The aerodynamic performance of it is evaluated by CFD (computational fluid dynamics).

Robust fault tolerant control allocation for a modern over‐actuated commercial aircraft

open access: yesIET Control Theory &Applications, Volume 15, Issue 2, Page 307-322, 29 January 2021., 2021
Abstract This paper presents a novel form of control allocation, designed within a sliding mode framework, for the fault tolerant control of over‐actuated systems. The control allocation is designed in such a way as to allow a subset of the actuators to remain inactive under nominal fault‐free conditions.
