Extreme Silk Toughness in Caerostris Spiders Is Limited to Adult Females

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
We ask whether species with exceptionally tough silk, like Caerostris bark spiders, show different developmental patterns in silk toughness between ontogenetic stages and sexes. We found that only large females produce exceptionally tough silk with higher initial stiffness, while juvenile females as well as adult and juvenile males produce inferior ...

3D large scale physical modelling for studying interactive drawing and drawpoint spacing in block caving mines

open access: yes, 2004
In block caving mines, the gravity flow of caved (broken) ore controls the amount of valuable material recovered and the extent to which it is diluted by caved waste rock.

A Tale of Appendages: Investigating Limb and Tail Variation in Salamanders

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
We analyzed limb and tail proportions in 44% of known salamander species using a phylogenetic comparative approach. Our results revealed significant variation among families and ecological groups, with aquatic species showing longer limbs and basal lineages having shorter tails.

Nocturnal Behavior of Wintering Common Cranes (Grus grus) Under Varying Environmental Conditions

open access: yesIntegrative Zoology, EarlyView.
For diurnal species, nighttime represents a critical ecological boundary. Understanding the ecological determinants of nocturnal activity in taxa traditionally regarded as inactive after dusk is essential for elucidating the adaptive significance of nighttime behavior. We examined how night phase, nocturnal brightness (moon illumination and cloud cover)

Brain reward function in young people with cannabis use disorder: A functional magnetic resonance imaging study

open access: yesAddiction, EarlyView.
Abstract Background and Aims Cannabis use disorder (CUD) affects ~50 million people globally. Neuroscientific theories suggest that a blunted neural response to non‐drug rewards is a hallmark of substance use disorders; however, this remains untested in CUD. The current study tested whether brain reward system responses to the anticipation and feedback

QUANTITATIVE ASSESSMENT OF IN-SITU STRESS IMPACTS ON ROCK MASS CAVABILITY IN BLOCK CAVING MINES

open access: yes
Block caving is a large-scale mining method that has been favored due to its ability to achieve high productivity and low operating costs. Especially in recent years, when more lowgrade and large ore bodies are discovered, and its extraction is only ...

Characterisation of block cave mining secondary fragmentation

open access: yes, 2016
Block cave mining is a widely employed mining method around the world due to its low operating cost. One of the key factors that affects block caving mine’s productivity is fragmentation; accordingly, significant efforts have been made and are currently being made to study fragmentation processes, including the use of numerical modelling and remote ...

Pulmonary Embolism—A Century of Progress

open access: yesANZ Journal of Surgery, EarlyView.
Reviews a century of progress in the diagnosis, prevention, and management of pulmonary embolism; from the first successful surgical embolectomy in 1924 to advanced imaging, pharmacological thromboprophylaxis, and treatment. In the 21st century, advances include catheter‐directed thrombolysis or mechanical thrombectomy under decision‐making guidance of

Lithic analysis in African archaeology: Advances and key themes

open access: yesArchaeometry, EarlyView.
Abstract Stone artifacts (lithics) preserve for extended periods; thus they are key evidence for probing the evolution of human technological behaviors. Africa boasts the oldest record of stone artifacts, spanning 3.3 Ma, rare instances of ethnographic stone tool‐making, and stone tool archives from diverse ecological settings, making it an anchor for ...
