Trellis Coded Block Codes: Design and Applications
Journal of Communications, 2012This paper presents a new family of block codes referred to as Trellis Coded Block (TCB) codes, which are built using a trellis code and a linear block code (LBC). The TCB code (TCBC) construction is based on an algebraic structure inherent to many LBCs, which allows one to partition an LBC into sub-sets with a constant distance between every pair of ...

Synchronization methods for block codes
IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 1962Summary: Efficient use of block codes to communicate over a telemetry channel is dependent upon the knowledge of the instants, in time, that one code waveform, or code word, ends and the succeeding waveform begins. This word synchronization is the subject of concern in this paper.

The ABCs of linear block codes
IEEE Signal Processing Magazine, 2004The basic principles of block codes are presented with illustrations to visualize the concepts of vector spaces and subspaces. Intuitive explanations of goals, capabilities, and limitations of codes are offered. An important subclass of block codes called cyclic codes is examined.

On variable-length-to-block coding
IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 1972Variable-length-to-block codes are a generalization of run-length codes. A coding theorem is first proved. When the codes are used to transmit information from fixed-rate sources through fixed-rate noiseless channels, buffer overflow results. The latter phenomenon is an important consideration in the retrieval of compressed data from storage.

Hybrid block truncation coding
IEEE Signal Processing Letters, 1997A hybrid block truncation coding (BTC) is presented. In the hybrid BTC, a universal codebook using Hamming codes and a differential pulse code modulation (DPCM) are employed, respectively, to the bit plane and the side information of BTC to reduce coding rate.

Sliding block implementation of block codes (Corresp.)
IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 1979A sliding block encoding scheme easily derivable from block encoding is presented. It is shown to perform arbitrarily close to the rate distortion function when the source is stationary and memoryless.

On multilevel block modulation codes
IEEE Transactions on Information Theory, 1991The multilevel technique for combining block coding and modulation is investigated. A general formulation is presented for multilevel modulation codes in terms of component codes with appropriate distance measures. A specific method for constructing multilevel block modulation codes with interdependency among component codes is proposed.

Enhancement of block-coded speech
ICASSP '87. IEEE International Conference on Acoustics, Speech, and Signal Processing, 2005This paper describes a very effective method for reducing framing noise associated with block-by-block speech coding algorithms. It is a post-coding speech enhancement procedure designed specifically to combat this type of noise. The procedure is based on a fully adaptive comb filter which is adapted in synchrony with the coding algorithm's frame ...

In this paper, we investigate block-coded QAM constructed by multilevel coding for the noncoherent generalized likelihood ratio test (GLRT) detector. For the AWGN channel, we derive a new GLRT detector and the corresponding distance. The minimum noncoherent distance of block-coded QAM is derived and two construction of noncoherent block-coded QAM (NBC ...
