Tennis Anyone? Teaching Experimental Design by Designing and Executing a Tennis Ball Experiment

open access: yesJournal of Statistics and Data Science Education, 2021
Understanding the abstract principles of statistical experimental design can challenge undergraduate students, especially when learned in a lecture setting.

Transferrin receptor 1‐mediated iron uptake supports thermogenic activation in human cervical‐derived adipocytes

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
In this study, we found that human cervical‐derived adipocytes maintain intracellular iron level by regulating the expression of iron transport‐related proteins during adrenergic stimulation. Melanotransferrin is predicted to interact with transferrin receptor 1 based on in silico analysis.

Interdecadal Variations in the Seasonal Cycle of Explosive Growth of Southern Hemisphere Storms with Impacts on Southern Australian Rainfall

open access: yesAtmosphere
Interdecadal variations, since the middle of the 20th century, in the seasonal cycle of Southern Hemisphere extratropical synoptic scale weather systems, are studied and related to associated anomalies in Southern Australian rainfall over south-west ...

The planar cell polarity protein Vangl2 interacts with the PDZ‐domains of Scribble but not with a unique PDZ‐like domain in Inturned

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Structural and biochemical characterisations show that the planar cell polarity (PCP) protein Inturned harbours a unique PDZ‐like domain that does not bind canonical PDZ‐binding motifs (PBMs) like that of another PCP protein Vangl2. In contrast, the apical‐basal polarity protein Scribble contains four PDZ domains that bind Vangl2, but one PDZ domain ...

Increasing the efficiency of well killing in depleted gas condensate fields with extremely low reservoir pressures

open access: yesНаука. Инновации. Технологии
The problem is studied by the example of gas condensate fields at the final stage of development, where production wells have abnormally low reservoir pressures and their killing for repair work is a serious challenge requiring a search for new solutions.

Universally Balanced Combinatorial Optimization Games

open access: yesGames, 2010
This article surveys studies on universally balanced properties of cooperative games defined in a succinct form. In particular, we focus on combinatorial optimization games in which the values to coalitions are defined through linear optimization ...

Combined impact of the cold vortex and atmospheric blocking on cold outbreaks over East Asia and the potential for short-range prediction of such occurrences

open access: yesEnvironmental Research Letters, 2022
This study explores the consequences of independent and combined effects of blockings on the northeast Asian cold vortex (NACV), and corresponding cold outbreaks over East Asia (EA) during boreal winters of 1979–2019.

Valosin‐containing protein counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its ATPase activity in vitro

open access: yesFEBS Letters, EarlyView.
Biomolecular condensates formed by fused in sarcoma (FUS) are dissolved by high ATP concentrations yet persist in cells. Using a reconstituted system, we demonstrate that valosin‐containing protein (VCP), an AAA+ ATPase, counteracts ATP‐driven dissolution of FUS condensates through its D2 ATPase activity.

The union spell-out principle

open access: yesNordlyd: Tromsø University Working Papers on Language & Linguistics, 2009
This paper argues that grammar has a union spell-out principle that dictates that contiguous heads be spelled out by a single morpheme or phrase if there exists a morpheme or phrase in the lexicon with a collection of the features of the contiguous ...
