Exceptional sequence of severe thunderstorms and related flash floods in May and June 2016 in Germany – Part 1: Meteorological background [PDF]
During a 15-day episode from 26 May to 9 June 2016, Germany was affected by an exceptionally large number of severe thunderstorms. Heavy rainfall, related flash floods and creek flooding, hail, and tornadoes caused substantial losses running into ...

ABSTRACT Introduction Cognitive impairment and exercise intolerance are common in dialysis patients. Cerebral perfusion and oxygenation play a major role in both cognitive function and exercise execution; HD session per se aggravates cerebral ischemia in this population. This study aimed to compare cerebral oxygenation and perfusion at rest and in mild

Factors determining sports results in elite national volleyball teams between 2004 and 2016
The main objective of this study was to identify the game-related statistics determining the sports results in volleyball between 2004 and 2016. In the study, the matches of six men’s and six women’s national volleyball teams competing in the most ...

Enteropathogenic E. coli (EPEC) infects the human intestinal epithelium, resulting in severe illness and diarrhoea. In this study, we compared the infection of cancer‐derived cell lines with human organoid‐derived models of the small intestine. We observed a delayed in attachment, inflammation and cell death on primary cells, indicating that host ...

Breath Analysis in Disease Diagnosis: Methodological Considerations and Applications
Breath analysis is a promising field with great potential for non-invasive diagnosis of a number of disease states. Analysis of the concentrations of volatile organic compounds (VOCs) in breath with an acceptable accuracy are assessed by means of using ...

Sequentially Determined Statistically Equivalent Blocks
In 1943 Wald [2] gave a method for constructing tolerance regions in the multivariate case. Tukey generalized Wald's procedure in [4] and the results were interpreted for discontinuous distributions in [5] and [6]. This paper presents a further generalization of the method so that statistically equivalent blocks can be determined sequentially; the ...

In this study, we present the structure of AcrIE8.1, a previously uncharacterized anti‐CRISPR protein that inhibits the type I‐E CRISPR‐Cas system. Through a combination of structural and biochemical analyses, we demonstrate that AcrIE8.1 directly binds to the Cas11 subunit of the Cascade complex to inhibit the CRISPR‐Cas system.

Block-relaxation Algorithms in Statistics [PDF]
Many algorithms in recent computational statistics are variations on a common theme. In this paper we discuss four such classes of algorithms. Or, more precisely, we discuss a single class of algorithms, and we show how some well-known classes of statistical algorithms fit in this common class.

The Caenorhabditis elegans DPF‐3 and human DPP4 have tripeptidyl peptidase activity
The dipeptidyl peptidase IV (DPPIV) family comprises serine proteases classically defined by their ability to remove dipeptides from the N‐termini of substrates, a feature that gave the family its name. Here, we report the discovery of a previously unrecognized tripeptidyl peptidase activity in DPPIV family members from two different species.
