The Combined Double‐Orifice and Single‐Patch Technique for Partial Atrioventricular Septal Defect in Adults: A Novel Strategy

open access: yesCardiovascular Therapeutics, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Aim The aim of this study is to share our experience of the combined double‐orifice and single‐patch technique for the correction of partial atrioventricular septal defect (pAVSD) and its associated tricuspid valve dysplasia (TVD). Methods Between January 2014 and May 2024, 99 patients (age ≥ 18 years) who underwent repair of pAVSD and its associated ...

A comparative study of Histidine-Tryptophan-Ketoglutarate (HTK) solution vs blood cardioplegia in combined coronary artery and valve surgery

open access: yesArcades of Medicine
Background: Ischemic heart disease is increasingly prevalent, leading to more patients undergoing open-heart surgeries such as coronary artery bypass grafting (CABG) and valve procedures.

Cold blood potassium diltiazem cardioplegia

open access: yesThe Journal of Thoracic and Cardiovascular Surgery, 1984
Despite the use of cold blood potassium (CBK) cardioplegia, the severely impaired myocardium and/or long ischemia time continue to be a challenge. Because of the association of Ca++ with cell injury and death, the use of Ca++ entry blockers is logical. Investigation of cold blood diltiazem (CBD) revealed no advantages over CBK cardioplegia.

Repair of Double‐Chamber Right Ventricle and Subvalvular Pulmonic Stenosis in a 78‐Year‐Old With Repaired Tetralogy of Fallot: Anesthetic Considerations and Review of the Literature

open access: yesCase Reports in Anesthesiology, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Background Double‐chambered right ventricle (DCRV) is a rare congenital anomaly characterized by hypertrophied muscular bundles dividing the right ventricle into high‐ and low‐pressure chambers. It is frequently associated with congenital heart disease, particularly tetralogy of Fallot (TOF), but rarely presents in late adulthood.

Large Nonfunctioning Anterior Mediastinal Epiaortic Paraganglioma

open access: yesCase Reports in Cardiology, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
We present a very rare case of a carotid body tumor accompanied by a large nonfunctioning epiaortic paraganglioma requiring ascending aorta replacement. Even though multiple paragangliomas in different locations in a single patient are highly uncommon, preoperative discovery of an extrathoracic neuroendocrine tumor should prompt full screening for the ...

Lack of Melatonin Secretion Induced by Moderate Hypothermia During Aortic‐Arch Surgery: Possible Implications in Neurological Outcomes

open access: yesJournal of Cardiac Surgery, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Preclinical data from the peculiar animal model of “synthetic torpor” (ST), a reversible hypothermic condition resembling natural torpor but pharmacologically induced in rats (a nonhibernating mammal), suggest that in hypothermic conditions, the neuroprotective effects of melatonin are strongly enhanced.

Single-Dose Lignocaine-Based Blood Cardioplegia in Single Valve Replacement Patients

open access: yesBrazilian Journal of Cardiovascular Surgery
OBJECTIVE: Myocardial protection is the most important in cardiac surgery. We compared our modified single-dose long-acting lignocaine-based blood cardioplegia with short-acting St Thomas 1 blood cardioplegia in patients undergoing single valve ...

Cardiac Microemboli During Cardiopulmonary Bypass: Structural Sources, Hemodynamics, and Neurologic Sequelae

open access: yesJournal of Cardiac Surgery, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Cardiopulmonary bypass (CPB) has been linked with the introduction of particulate matter and gaseous microemboli, which are believed to contribute to neurologic dysfunction after cardiac surgery. During CPB, microemboli can originate in the aorta from manipulation, valve decalcification, cardiotomy suction, cavitation, and air entrainment into the ...

Bentall–De Bono Procedure via Right Infra‐Axillary Mini‐Thoracotomy: Early and Midterm Outcomes of a Novel Minimally Invasive Approach

open access: yesJournal of Cardiac Surgery, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Background/Aim The Bentall–De Bono procedure stands as the primary treatment method for ascending aortic aneurysms together with their associated valve disorders. The procedure requires a complete sternotomy for execution, but this method causes multiple complications which decrease patient comfort.

Postpump Chorea After Pediatric Cardiac Surgery: Exploring Causes and Treatment

open access: yesJournal of Cardiac Surgery, Volume 2026, Issue 1, 2026.
Introduction Postpump chorea is a rare but potentially disabling movement disorder that arises days to weeks after cardiopulmonary bypass, most often following deep hypothermic circulatory arrest in pediatric patients undergoing repair of complex congenital heart defects. Clinically, postpump chorea presents as involuntary, nonrhythmic, choreiform, and
