3D (Bio) Printing Combined Fiber Fabrication Methods for Tissue Engineering Applications: Possibilities and Limitations

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Biofabrication aims at providing innovative technologies and tools for the fabrication of tissue‐like constructs for tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications. By integrating multiple biofabrication technologies, such as 3D (bio) printing with fiber fabrication methods, it would be more realistic to reconstruct native tissue's ...

Kinematic and dynamic forcing strategies for predicting the transport of inertial capsules via a combined lattice Boltzmann-Immersed Boundary method

open access: yes, 2019
Modeling the transport of deformable capsules under different flow regimens is crucial in a variety of fields, including oil rheology, blood flow and the dispersion of pollutants. The aim of this study is twofold.

Measurements of Blood Flow Velocity in the Microcirculation [PDF]

open access: yesUpsala Journal of Medical Sciences, 1975
A method for the measurement of red blood cell velocity in the microcirculation is described. The technique is based on the on-line cross-correlation of the delay between optical signatures derived from photodetectors aligned in direction oflow. A specialised photodiode holder which can be inserted directly in place of an ocular is described.

Microporous Microgel Assemblies Facilitating the Recruitment and Osteogenic Differentiation of Progenitor Cells for Bone Regeneration

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
There is a significant need for biomaterials with well‐defined stability and bioactivity to support tissue regeneration. In this study, we developed a tunable microgel platform that enables the decoupling of stiffness from porosity, thereby promoting bone regeneration.

Estimation of blood velocity vectors using transverse ultrasound beam focusing and cross-correlation [PDF]

open access: yes, 1999
Modern ultrasound scanners estimate the blood velocity by tracking the movement of the blood scatterers along the ultrasound beam. This is done by emitting pulsed ultrasound fields and finding the shift in position from pulse to pulse by correlating the ...

Smart, Bio‐Inspired Polymers and Bio‐Based Molecules Modified by Zwitterionic Motifs to Design Next‐Generation Materials for Medical Applications

open access: yesAdvanced Functional Materials, EarlyView.
Bio‐based and (semi‐)synthetic zwitterion‐modified novel materials and fully synthetic next‐generation alternatives show the importance of material design for different biomedical applications. The zwitterionic character affects the physiochemical behavior of the material and deepens the understanding of chemical interaction mechanisms within the ...

Uncoupling of Microvascular Blood Flow and Capillary Density in Vascular Cognitive Impairment

open access: yesFrontiers in Neurology, 2019
Cerebral small vessel disease (cSVD) plays an important role in dementia and is a major cause for vascular cognitive impairment (VCI). Recent studies hypothesized that capillary dysfunction including reduction of capillary patency, rather than a flow ...

Peristaltic Transport of a Couple Stress Fluid: Some Applications to Hemodynamics

open access: yes, 2012
The present paper deals with a theoretical investigation of the peristaltic transport of a couple stress fluid in a porous channel. The study is motivated towards the physiological flow of blood in the micro-circulatory system, by taking account of the ...
