Copper-transporting ATPase is important for malaria parasite fertility [PDF]
Homeostasis of the trace element copper is essential to all eukaryotic life. Copper serves as a cofactor in metalloenzymes and catalyses electron transfer reactions as well as the generation of potentially toxic reactive oxygen species. Here, we describe

A soft tick vector of Babesia sp. YLG in Yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) nests
Babesia sp. YLG has recently been described in Yellow-legged gull (Larus michahellis) chicks and belongs to the Peircei clade in the new classification of Piroplasms. Here, we studied Babesia sp.

Inactivation of Plasmodium falciparum in whole blood by riboflavin plus irradiation.
BACKGROUND: Malaria parasites are frequently transmitted by unscreened blood transfusions in Africa. Pathogen reduction methods in whole blood would thus greatly improve blood safety.

Evidence of blood stage efficacy with a virosomal malaria vaccine in a Phase IIa clinical trial [PDF]
Background Previous research indicates that a combination vaccine targeting different stages of the malaria life cycle is likely to provide the most effective malaria vaccine.

BLOOD PARASITES IN BIRDS FROM MADAGASCAR [PDF]
Madagascar has long been recognized for its unique and diverse biota. In particular, significant effort has been made to establish baseline population data to better conserve the endemic avifauna. During field expeditions between 1993 and 2004, birds were mist-netted at 11 different sites, at elevations from 60 m to 2,050 m above sea level.

Counterflow dielectrophoresis for trypanosome enrichment and detection in blood [PDF]
Human African trypanosomiasis or sleeping sickness is a deadly disease endemic in sub-Saharan Africa, caused by single-celled protozoan parasites. Although it has been targeted for elimination by 2020, this will only be realized if diagnosis can be ...

Clinical malaria case definition and malaria attributable fraction in the highlands of western Kenya. [PDF]
BackgroundIn African highland areas where endemicity of malaria varies greatly according to altitude and topography, parasitaemia accompanied by fever may not be sufficient to define an episode of clinical malaria in endemic areas.

Plasticity in transmission strategies of the malaria parasite, Plasmodium chabaudi : environmental and genetic effects [PDF]
Parasites may alter their behaviour to cope with changes in the within-host environment. In particular, investment in transmission may alter in response to the availability of parasite resources or host immune responses.

Promiscuous stimulation of HSP70 ATPase activity by parasite‐derived J‐domains
The malaria parasite Plasmodium falciparum exports three highly homologous yet functionally divergent J‐domain proteins into human erythrocytes. Here, we show that J‐domains isolated from all three proteins effectively stimulate the ATPase activity of both endogenous host and exported parasite HSP70 chaperones.
