The intravascular adhesion and aggregation of platelets initiate hemostasis and arterial thrombosis. In vitro, platelet aggregation is induced by many different agents; which of these is responsible for aggregation in vivo is now under investigation.

Antigenicity of Blood Platelets
1969The first knowledge of the antigenicity of platelets dates from the beginning of this century (Marino, 4905). The authors studied at first the antigenicity in heterorelationship in animals and heteroantibodies, obtained by immunization, were used frequently to provoke experimental thrombopenic purpura. Cole (1907) was the first to prepare a heteroserum

Blood Platelets and Psychiatry
British Journal of Psychiatry, 1981Blood platelets appear to have a somewhat schizoid existence. Haematologically they are intimately connected with the process of clot formation (for review, see Zucker, 1980) and, at least from a research standpoint, this aspect of their being is largely separate from their use as models of monoaminergic neurones (for reviews, see Maynert and Isaac ...

Numerous methods for counting blood platelets have appeared since Schultze's 1 original description in 1865 of these "granular formations" as microscopic cellular constituents of normal blood. Hittmair 2 in his recent review of the literature referred to twenty new methods that had appeared within the previous ten years.

Platelet estimation in whole blood
Physics in Medicine & Biology, 1978An application of particle size analysis is described for the estimation of platelet counts in whole blood based on a variable size threshold and baseline. The simplicity of the sample preparation for this technique may enable its automation as a semiquantitative screening method.

Studies of inherited platelet disorders have led to major advances in our knowledge of platelet physiology, thus permitting the development of antiplatelet agents that are now widely used to treat vascular diseases. New therapeutic strategies have also resulted from a better understanding of megakaryocytopoiesis, notably including the use of ...
