Tracing the Intrinsic Shapes of Dwarf Galaxies out to Four Effective Radii: Clues to Low-Mass Stellar Halo Formation [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2020
Though smooth, extended spheroidal stellar outskirts have long been observed around nearby dwarf galaxies, it is unclear whether dwarfs generically host an extended stellar halo. We use imaging from the Hyper Suprime-Cam Subaru Strategic Program (HSC-SSP) to measure the shapes of dwarf galaxies out to four effective radii for a sample of dwarfs at 0 ...

A high excitation HII region in the faint dwarf elliptical galaxy A0951+68 [PDF]

open access: yes, 1997
We present the results of BVRI imaging and optical spectroscopy of the dwarf galaxy A0951+68. The images reveal that, although this galaxy is classified as a dwarf elliptical, it has some properties that are similar to dwarf irregular galaxies. It contains two bright knots of emission, one of which is red and unresolved and the other blue and resolved.

Histochemical indications for a chemically complex signal produced by the cervical gill slit gland of the pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps)

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract The pygmy sperm whale (Kogia breviceps) possesses an exocrine gland associated with its false gill slit pigmentation pattern. The cervical gill slit gland is a compound tubuloalveolar gland that produces a holocrine secretion and displays maturational changes in size and secretory histology. While the morphology of the cervical gill slit gland

Discovery of sexual dimorphism of the laryngeal sac in the common minke whale Balaenoptera acutorostrata

open access: yesThe Anatomical Record, EarlyView.
Abstract Mysticetes, or baleen whales, have an air sac on the ventral surface of the larynx known as the “laryngeal sac.” The primary hypothesis regarding this structure's function is that it is involved in sound production. However, several other functions have been proposed, including air recycling, air storage, and even buoyancy control.

Star Formation Histories of Dwarf Galaxies from the Colour-Magnitude Diagrams of Their Resolved Stellar Populations

open access: yesAdvances in Astronomy, 2010
In this tutorial paper we summarize how the star formation (SF) history of a galactic region can be derived from the colour-magnitude diagram (CMD) of its resolved stars.

Gaia Search for Stellar Companions of TESS Objects of Interest V

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT In this paper, we present the latest results of our ongoing multiplicity survey of (Community) TESS Objects of Interest, using astrometry and photometry from the latest data release of the ESA Gaia mission to detect stellar companions of these stars and to characterize their properties.

Ethnomedicinal Uses, Phytochemistry, Pharmacological Activities, and Toxicology of the Subfamily Gomphrenoideae (Amaranthaceae): A Comprehensive Review

open access: yesChemistry &Biodiversity, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The subfamily Gomphrenoideae is composed of about 480 accepted species, many of which have been historically used as medicinal plants, reason why they have been studied in terms of chemical profile, biological activity, and safety. This review consolidates the advances in research on this subfamily over the past 47 years, emphasizing its ...

Sub-luminous blue stars and white dwarfs [PDF]

open access: yesSymposium - International Astronomical Union, 1959
Sub-luminous stars of high temperature show a wide variety of spectra and physical properties. Vorontsov-Velyaminov has called this region of the HR diagram the “blue-white sequence”. I wish to discuss the fainter members of this class. The growth of knowledge of colors and spectra has been rapid compared to that of the luminosities, and unfortunately ...

Heterogeneous Electrocatalytic CO2 Reduction by Supported Molecular Catalysts Well Dispersed on Electrode Surface

open access: yesChemElectroChem, EarlyView.
This mini review overviews the most recent advances (2020–2024) in heterogeneous electrocatalytic CO2R by well‐dispersed molecular catalysts on electrode surface, mainly focusing on the impacts of efficient molecule‐level dispersion and rational catalyst‐support interactions on electronic properties, multi‐electron transfer kinetics, and overall ...

Efficient Singlet Oxygen Monitoring in Aqueous Media Comprising a Polymer‐embedded Eu3+‐Complex

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
A singlet dioxygen (1O2) sensitive Eu(III) complex embedded in polymer nanoparticles efficiently detects 1O2 in aqueous media by a remarkable increase in Eu3+ luminescence. These particles also adhere to bacteria surfaces, where the cells appear brightly stained in the presence of 1O2 enabling spectroscopic evaluation and easy detection under the ...
