Addressing persistent challenges in digital image analysis of cancer tissue: resources developed from a hackathon

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Large multidimensional digital images of cancer tissue are becoming prolific, but many challenges exist to automatically extract relevant information from them using computational tools. We describe publicly available resources that have been developed jointly by expert and non‐expert computational biologists working together during a virtual hackathon

Relativistic blue‐ and red‐shifted absorption lines in AGNs

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, 2006
AbstractCurrent, accumulating evidence for (mildly) relativistic blue‐ and red‐shifted absorption lines in AGNs is reviewed. XMM‐Newton and Chandra sensitive X‐ray observations are starting to probe not only the kinematics (velocity) but also the dynamics (accelerations) of highly ionized gas flowing in‐and‐out from, likely, a few gravitational radii ...

MicroRNAs in seminal plasma are able to discern infertile men at increased risk of developing testicular cancer

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 19, Issue 4, Page 1188-1202, April 2025.
Male infertility is a known risk factor for the development of testicular cancer. In this paper, we analyzed the expression profile of a microRNA panel by real‐time PCR and validated the results by digital PCR. Experimental and bioinformatics analyses allowed us to identify possible biomarkers able to discern men with a higher risk of developing ...

TRPM4 contributes to cell death in prostate cancer tumor spheroids, and to extravasation and metastasis in a zebrafish xenograft model system

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 19, Issue 5, Page 1299-1309, May 2025.
Transient receptor potential melastatin‐4 (TRPM4) is overexpressed in prostate cancer (PCa). Knockout of TRPM4 resulted in reduced PCa tumor spheroid size and decreased PCa tumor spheroid outgrowth. In addition, lack of TRPM4 increased cell death in PCa tumor spheroids.

Under bending optical assessment of flexible glass based multilayer structures fabricated on polymeric substrates

open access: yesOptical Materials: X, 2023
We present the results of the spectral transmittance and reflectance of a SiO2/TiO2 1D photonic crystal deposited by Radio Frequency sputtering on a flexible polymeric substrate, which shows a blue-shift in its transmittance stopband proportional to the ...

CRISPR targeting of FOXL2 c.402C>G mutation reduces malignant phenotype in granulosa tumor cells and identifies anti‐tumoral compounds

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 19, Issue 4, Page 1092-1116, April 2025.
FOXL2 c.402C>G mutation drives granulosa cell tumors. Using CRISPR technology, we selectively corrected this mutation, reducing malignancy and increasing sensitivity to dasatinib and ketoconazole. Transcriptomic changes revealed potential therapeutic targets, demonstrating CRISPR's promise for treating this rare ovarian cancer.

Clinical significance of stratifying prostate cancer patients through specific circulating genes

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, Volume 19, Issue 5, Page 1310-1331, May 2025.
We tested a specific panel of genes representative of luminal, neuroendocrine and stem‐like cells in the blood of prostate cancer patients, showing predictive value from diagnosis to late stages of disease. This approach allows monitoring of treatment responses and outcomes at specific time points in trajectories.

Spontaneous Emission Studies for Blue and Green InGaN-Based Light-Emitting Diodes and Laser Diodes

open access: yesPhotonics
We investigated the efficiency droop phenomenon in blue and green GaN-based light-emitting diodes (LEDs) and laser diodes (LDs), which poses a significant challenge in high-power LEDs and is characterized by a reduction in external quantum efficiency at ...

New treatment of red/blue shifts of emitted photons in terms of Kerr-Newman black hole parameters [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv
This study presents a method for determining the mass, angular momentum, and charge of Kerr-Newman black holes by analyzing the red/blue shifts of photons emitted by geodesic neutral massive objects. We derive the equations of motion for photons in the Kerr-Newman spacetime.
