Allan Sandage: Blue Stragglers

2021
One of the more recent stellar discoveries was made by noticing something out of place in globular cluster Messier 3 (M3) (Fig. 19.1).

Radial velocities of blue stragglers in M3

Publications of the Astronomical Society of the Pacific, 1983
The authors have obtained 1 A resolution spectra of five blue stragglers in M3 all with mv ≥ 17.3 using the MMT spectrograph and photon-counting Reticon. The spectra cover the range 4580 A to 5450 A, and except for Hβ are devoid of strong features. From measurements of the Hβ lines in the five blue stragglers and three velocity standards the authors ...

Binary population synthesis for blue stragglers

Astrophysics and Space Science, 2010
In this talk, we will simply show the consequences of binary population synthesis for blue stragglers, such as the integrated spectral energy distribution (ISED), the color-magnitude diagram, the specific frequency, and the influences on colors. Blue stragglers have been found in all stellar populations and they are an important population component in

Are All Blue Stragglers Ap Stars?

International Astronomical Union Colloquium, 1976
SummaryA list of open clusters with blue stragglers studied for Ap characteristics is presented. In addition to previously published results new spectroscopic data are given of blue stragglers in the open cluster IC 4756 derived from ESO spectrograms taken in 1973. Preliminary conclusions concerning the status of Ap stars and blue stragglers are drawn.

Are Blue Stragglers Mixed during Collisions?

The Astrophysical Journal, 1995
The smoothed particle hydrodynamics (SPH) simulations of Benz & Hills led to the assumption that blue stragglers created by collisions are initially fully mixed. The theoretical models of stars created under this assumption fit the observed blue straggler sequences well.
