Effect of age class on the survivorship and spatial movement patterns of headstarted Texas horned lizards soft‐released into an urban population

open access: yesThe Journal of Wildlife Management, EarlyView.
When compared to resident lizards of the corresponding age class, juvenile headstarted Texas horned lizards soft‐released into an urban population exhibited more favorable responses to short‐term translocation objectives (i.e., daily movement rates, home range sizes, and survival rates) than did conspecifics headstarted to the adult age class ...

The First Photometric Analysis of Two Low-mass-ratio Contact Binary Systems in TESS Survey

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Low-mass-ratio ( q ) contact binary systems are progenitors of stellar mergers such as blue stragglers or fast-rotating FK Com stars. In this study, we present the first light curve analysis of two newly identified low mass-ratio contact binary systems ...

Supercritical Angle Fluorescence and Raman Techniques in Biophotonics

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, EarlyView.
Supercritical angle fluorescence (SAF) microscopy and supercritical angle Raman (SAR) spectroscopy have emerged as powerful tools in the field of biophotonics, enabling high‐resolution imaging and spectroscopy of biological specimens near interfaces. This review article provides a comprehensive overview of the principles, techniques, applications, and ...

Binary Stars Take What They Get: Evidence for Efficient Mass Transfer from Stripped Stars with Rapidly Rotating Companions

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
Binary stars and their interactions shape the formation of compact binaries, supernovae, and gravitational-wave sources. The efficiency of mass transfer—the fraction of mass retained by the accretor during binary interaction—is a critical parameter that ...

Advances in Position‐Momentum Entanglement: A Versatile Tool for Quantum Technologies

open access: yesLaser &Photonics Reviews, EarlyView.
Position–momentum entanglement constitutes a high‐dimensional continuous‐variable resource in quantum optics. Recent advances in its generation, characterization, and control are reviewed, with emphasis on spontaneous parametric down‐conversion and modern measurement techniques.

Formation Channels for Blue Straggler Stars [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
In this chapter we consider two formation channels for blue straggler stars: 1) the merger of two single stars via a collision, and 2) those produced via mass transfer within a binary. We review how computer simulations show that stellar collisions are likely to lead to relatively little mass loss and are thus effective in producing a young population ...

A Service Ecosystems Approach for Sustainable Volunteer Engagement: Developing Insights From COVID‐19 Disruptions

open access: yesNonprofit Management and Leadership, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The purpose of this paper is to develop foundational propositions designed to reflect success factors in the recruitment and retention of volunteers for future longevity. Using insights gathered from three universities' experiences of student volunteering during COVID‐19, plus capturing the experiences of volunteer involving organizations, we ...

Stellar Collisions and Blue Straggler Formation

open access: yes, 2001
We review recent 3D hydrodynamic calculations of stellar collisions using the Smoothed Particle Hydrodynamics (SPH) method, and we discuss the implications of the results for the formation and evolution of blue stragglers in globular clusters. We also discuss the construction of simple analytic models for merger remnants, approximating the mass loss ...

Environmental Stressors Influence Spatial Complexity in a Fluvial Macrophyte meadow

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, EarlyView.
This research investigates the nonlinear relationships between environmental stressors and the fine‐scale spatial complexity of a fluvial macrophytes meadow. The use of multivariate spatial analysis allowed us to identify two major environmental gradients (nutrients and light) and two major complexity gradients (related to abundance and fragmentation).

Extending Field Limits in Nanoscale Magnetic Imaging With Metamaterial‐Inspired Magnetic Flux Concentrators

open access: yesSmall, EarlyView.
Micrometer‐sized flower‐shaped metamaterial magnetic flux concentrators are fabricated directly around nano and micromagnetic samples, enabling local field enhancement. Integrated into magnetic sensitive photoemission electron microscopy, they extend the available magnetic field range by up to a factor of five.
