The Unreasonable Effectiveness of the nΣv Approximation

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal
In kinetic theory, the classic n Σ v approach calculates the rate of particle interactions from local quantities: the number density of particles n , the cross section Σ, and the average relative speed v .

Commissioning an Inexpensive Off‐The‐Shelf Spectrograph for Radial‐Velocity Studies

open access: yesAstronomische Nachrichten, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT We present a way to set up an inexpensive out of the shelf spectrograph at a local observatory. Stability and resolution of the spectrograph are high enough for radial velocity determination of binary stars or determination of stellar characteristics. Even some exoplanets might be detectable via the radial velocity method.

The First Photometric Analysis of Two Low-mass-ratio Contact Binary Systems in TESS Survey

open access: yesThe Astronomical Journal
Low-mass-ratio ( q ) contact binary systems are progenitors of stellar mergers such as blue stragglers or fast-rotating FK Com stars. In this study, we present the first light curve analysis of two newly identified low mass-ratio contact binary systems ...

The impacts of biological invasions

open access: yesBiological Reviews, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The Anthropocene is characterised by a continuous human‐mediated reshuffling of the distributions of species globally. Both intentional and unintentional introductions have resulted in numerous species being translocated beyond their native ranges, often leading to their establishment and subsequent spread – a process referred to as biological

Binary Stars Take What They Get: Evidence for Efficient Mass Transfer from Stripped Stars with Rapidly Rotating Companions

open access: yesThe Astrophysical Journal Letters
Binary stars and their interactions shape the formation of compact binaries, supernovae, and gravitational-wave sources. The efficiency of mass transfer—the fraction of mass retained by the accretor during binary interaction—is a critical parameter that ...

Structural Aspects of Lithium‐Ion Conduction in the Phosphidotitanate Li8TiP4 and Its Comparison With Li7+5xTa1−xP4 and Li8−xTi1−xTaxP4

open access: yesChemistry – A European Journal, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT The chemical system Li/Ti/P has previously been subject to intensive investigation. However, reliable structural data for the reported phases have remained elusive. Motivated by the growing interest in phosphorus‐based lithium‐ion conductors, we have reinvestigated the synthesis, crystal structure, and physical properties of Li8TiP4.

Sudan at War With Itself: Civilian Devastation in the Civil War

open access: yesConflict Resolution Quarterly, EarlyView.
ABSTRACT A civil war is raging in Sudan between the Sudan Armed Forces (SAF) and the Rapid Support Forces (RSF) along with militia groups. Beginning on April 15, 2023, and continuing at least to this writing (October 15, 2025), civilian noncombatants have been subjected to bombings, beatings, torture, shootings, rape, and murder on a large scale. Since

Nanoparticles in microdroplets: Recent advances in microfluidic generators for producing functional microbeads

open access: yesDroplet, EarlyView.
Functional hybrid microbeads with electrical, magnetic, and/or optical responsiveness have emerged as versatile platforms for biotechnology. This review highlights recent advances in microfluidic technologies for producing such microbeads, with a focus on incorporating functional nanoparticles in microdroplet systems.
