Experimental bluetongue disease in white-tailed deer.
Canadian journal of comparative medicine and veterinary science, 2005Nine white-tailed deer and six sheep were experimentally exposed to the California BTV-8 strain of bluetongue virus. The infections were fatal for seven of the nine deer. An additional deer died from exposure to an isolate of bluetongue virus from bighorn sheep. Clinical signs and lesions of bluetongue in deer were described.

Culicoides, hematophagous Diptera vectors of Bluetongue disease
2005Bluetongue is an exotic viral disease qualified as “re-emerging” in Europe, and whose vectors are small hematophagous diptera of Ceratopogonidae family (Culicoides genus). The best-known Culicoides species is Culicoides imicola, which is the main vector incriminated in Europe.

The disease is caused by an orbivirus belonging to the Reoviridae family. The genome is segmented in 10 double-strand RNA encapsidated in a non-enveloped spherical particle with a icosaedral symetry. Twenty distinct serotypes have been identified so far,
