Wakes behind heated cylinders, circular and square, have been experimentally investigated at low Reynolds numbers. The electrically heated cylinder is mounted in a vertical airflow facility such that the buoyancy aids the inertia of the main flow. The dimensionless parameters, namely, Reynolds number and Richardson number, are varied to examine flow ...

On bluff body flame stabilization
Applied Scientific Research, 1961Several aspects of bluff body flame stabilization are discussed in terms of a theory which focuses attention on the initial mixing region between cool combustible and hot combustion products. Some experiments by Broman and Zukoski on flame stabilization in a “deflected jet” are correlated in terms of the theory. The “characteristic time” of Zukoski and

Bluff-body aerodynamics and turbulence
Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 1993Abstract This paper reviews recent findings on the effects of freestream turbulence on bluff-body flow and flutter. Materials of this review are mostly taken from the author's own wind-tunnel measurements on 2D and 3D bluff bodies with rectangular cross-sections. The effects of both turbulence intensity and scale are discussed in detail.

A computational study investigating the flow past bluff bodies in the low Reynolds numbers range (Re ≤ 750) is presented. Two- and three-dimensional investigations are performed to investigate various flow transitions that occur when canonical bluff bodies such as circular cylinders and spheres are placed near a planar boundary, rotated or a ...

Perspectives on bluff body aerodynamics
Journal of Wind Engineering and Industrial Aerodynamics, 1993The variations of drag and base suction of circular cylinders and bluff plates over the range of Reynolds number from 10 to 10^7 is discussed, with emphasis on the importance of the separated shear layers. A model for flows with a wake splitter plate is proposed. Effects of “three dimensionality” are discussed.
