Exceptional Visual‐Opsin Coexpression and Phenotypic Diversity in Outer‐Retinal Photoreceptors of Caenophidian Snakes

open access: yesJournal of Comparative Neurology, Volume 533, Issue 10, October 2025.
In snakes, profound differences in retinal architecture are observed between diurnal and nocturnal species. Additionally, in the rod‐dominated retinas of nocturnal snakes, coexpression of the cone opsins SWS1 and LWS in individual cones is common, while rhodopsin (RH1) is restricted to typical rods.

Morphological and molecular identification of ticks infesting Boa constrictor (Squamata, Boidae) in Manaus (Central Brazilian Amazon)

open access: yesRevista Brasileira de Parasitologia Veterinária, 2014
The Boa constrictor is one of the world's largest vertebrate carnivores and is often found in urban areas in the city of Manaus, Brazil. The morphological identification of ticks collected from 27 snakes indicated the occurrence of Amblyomma dissimile ...

Switch from sexual to parthenogenetic reproduction in a zebra shark [PDF]

open access: yes, 2017
Parthenogenesis is a natural form of asexual reproduction in which embryos develop in the absence of fertilisation. Most commonly found in plants and invertebrate organisms, an increasing number of vertebrate species have recently been reported employing

Object detection‐assisted workflow facilitates cryptic snake monitoring

open access: yesRemote Sensing in Ecology and Conservation, Volume 11, Issue 5, Page 606-617, October 2025.
Camera traps are powerful tools used to study animals. However, camera trap studies often produce large datasets requiring labor‐intensive classification. While many object detection models have been developed to facilitate image analysis, their efficacy when presented with novel species and systems is poorly understood.

Diversity Loss and Homogenization in Snake Communities in a Deforestation Hotspot

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 31, Issue 10, October 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Agricultural expansion into tropical forests causes massive biodiversity loss. However, existing knowledge about these losses is heavily biased towards rainforests, as well as towards birds and mammals. Focusing on the South American Chaco, a global hotspot of deforestation and defaunation, we assessed how agriculture‐driven deforestation ...

The evolution of muscle spindles

open access: yesExperimental Physiology, Volume 110, Issue 10, Page 1401-1421, October 1, 2025.
Abstract Muscle spindles are stretch‐sensitive mechanoreceptors found in the skeletal muscles of most four‐limbed vertebrates. They are unique amongst sensory receptors in the ability to regulate their sensitivity by contraction of the intrafusal muscle fibres on which the sensory endings lie.

Hepatozoon cf. terzii (Sambon & Seligman, 1907) infection in the snake Boa constrictor constrictor from north Brazil: transmission to the mosquito Culex quinquefasciatus and the lizard Tropidurus torquatus

open access: yesParasite, 2004
Specimens of Hepatozoon-infected Boa constrictor constrictor were obtained from localities in Pará State, north Brazil. Gametocytes in erythrocytes of the peripheral blood measured 10 x 2.5-16.2 x 3.7 µm.
