Effects of supplemental betaine to semen extenders on semen quality in boars [PDF]
AbstractTwo experiments were conducted to evaluate the use of supplemental betaine in commercially available semen extenders. In experiment 1 (Exp1), semen was collected from six mature boars once weekly for 6 wk (3 wk in summer and 3 wk in winter) and diluted into a commercial extender with the following betaine concentrations: 0, 51, 102, and 205 mM.

Cryopreservation of boar semen
Sperm cryopreservation is the best technology for long-term storage of the semen. However, the damage of boar spermatozoa by cryopreservation is more severe than in other animal species and a standardized freezing protocol for efficient cryopreservation ...

Myo-inositol improves the viability of boar sperm during liquid storage
IntroductionLiquid preservation of boar semen is a highly preferred method for semen preservation in pig production. However, oxidative stress is the main challenge during the liquid preservation of boar semen in a time dependent manner.

Semen Quality and Fertility After Heat Stress in Boars [PDF]
Sperm morphology and the fertilizing capacity of ejaculated spermatozoa were examined in 6 Swedish Landrace boars before and after heat stress. The boars were exposed to 35° C during 100 h in a climatic room. Fertility was measured by insemination of gilts before and at various times after heat stress. Each gilt (n = 44) was inseminated with a total of

Selection for boar fertility and semen quality - the way ahead [PDF]
Critical needs for the swine industry in terms of boar fertility evaluations are validation of semen quality estimates with in vivo reproductive data; estimation of the relative fertility of boars; and elimination of sub-fertile ejaculates. Single sire matings are the best way to validate semen quality estimates with reproductive performance.

Automatic classification of the acrosome status of boar spermatozoa using digital image processing and LVQ [PDF]
We consider images of boar spermatozoa obtained with an optical phase-contrast microscope. Our goal is to automatically classify single sperm cells as acrosome-intact (class 1) or acrosome-damaged (class 2).

Selenium in Pig Nutrition and Reproduction: Boars and Semen Quality — A Review [PDF]
Selenium plays an important role in boar nutrition via participating in selenoprotein synthesis. It seems likely that selenoproteins are central for antioxidant system regulation in the body. Se-dependent enzyme glutathione peroxidase (GSH-Px) is the most studied selenoprotein in swine production.

Reduced glutathione and cysteine hydrochloride on crossbred bull semen [PDF]
Over the last few years, good quality freezable semen was not utilized effectively due to less knowledge about the freezability of semen. One reason is the lack of sufficient antioxidants in the seminal plasma and semen extender.
