Northern Bobwhite Non‐Breeding Habitat Selection in a Longleaf Pine Woodland
Journal of Wildlife Management, 2020Efforts to halt the decline of the northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus; bobwhite) across its distribution have had limited success. Understanding bobwhite habitat requirements across the annual cycle and at varying scales is essential to aid efforts ...

Nesting Ecology of Northern Bobwhite on a Working Farm
, 2020Creating early successional vegetation on working farms can increase northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus; hereafter, bobwhite) abundance with little reduction in crop production, but specific effects of field border establishment on bobwhite nesting ...

Pasteurellosis in Bobwhite Quail
Avian Diseases, 1991A flock of 5000 six-week-old bobwhite quails (Colinus virginianus) experienced high mortality (52%) over a 2-day period. Mortality was 99% within a 6-day period. Clinical signs were depression followed shortly by death. Gross lesions observed in dead quails were congested lungs and, in a few cases, mottled livers.

Reduction in meso‐mammal nest predators improves northern bobwhite demographics
Journal of Wildlife Management, 2019Nest predation is the major cause of nest failure in northern bobwhites ( Colinus virginianus ; i.e., bobwhites). Control of mid-sized mammalian nest predators (i.e., meso-mammals) is often conducted to increase reproductive success on lands managed for ...

Lead toxicity of Bobwhite quail
Bulletin of Environmental Contamination and Toxicology, 1975Five experiments were conducted involving both juvenile and adult Bobwhite quail (Colinus virginianus) to study the toxicity of lead acetate, lead shot, powdered lead and antimony. Performance of juvenile birds receiving up to 1,500 p.p.m. of lead as lead acetate was not significantly influenced during the six-week experimental period.

Cerebrospinal Nematodiasis in Bobwhite Quail
Avian Diseases, 1981Natural outbreaks of avian cerebrospinal nematodiasis have been reported in a chukar partridge (10), in pigeons (7), in an emu (16), and most recently as an extensive outbreak in commercial chickens (9). Migrating larvae of the common ascarid of raccoons, Baylisascaris procyonis, were the cause of the outbreak in commercial chickens (9) and were ...

Atypical Histomoniasis in Bobwhite Quail
Avian Diseases, 1980An outbreak of histomonad infection of an apparent atypical nature was diagnosed in a flock of about 850 Bobwhite quail. Mortality was 95% over a 3-week period. The most prominent gross pathologic lesions were in the livers: disseminated white foci of necrosis, 1 to 2 mm in diameter, and subcapsular multifocal splenic necrosis was seen occasionally ...

SUMMARY Slit-lamp biomicroscopy was used to characterize the clinical progression of naturally occurring cataracts in Bobwhite quail at 3, 4, 7, 10, and 13 months and at 2, 3, and 4 years of age. Four clinical grades of cataracts that were identified varied from minute focal opacities to complete opacification of the lens.

Northern Bobwhite (Colinus virginianus) Space Use Minimally Affected by Oil and Gas Development ☆,☆☆
Rangeland Ecology & Management, 2019Despite the fact that the northern bobwhite (Colinus virginianus Linnaeus; hereafter, bobwhite) is one of the most well-studied and widely distributed wildlife species in North America, we know little about how bobwhite respond to oil and gas ...
