Perspectives on body composition
Current Opinion in Clinical Nutrition and Metabolic Care, 2002Herein modern body composition techniques are described, and the uses to which they are put are set forth. They have increased our knowledge of the human growth process as well as the effects of disease, hormones, and nutrition. In essence they provide for a bloodless dissection of the human body.

Body composition at the bedside
European Journal of Gastroenterology & Hepatology, 1997To evaluate the use of an inexpensive hand-held bioelectric impedance analysis machine which measures lean body mass, by technical comparisons against standard instruments and techniques (an in-house bioelectric impedance machine and dual energy X-ray absorptiometry), and by performing body composition analyses in groups of potentially malnourished ...

An early statement concerning sleep function suggested that sleep was a time “related to the Sisyphean labor of anabolically building up what each day’s catabolic activity has torn down” (Johnson and Lubin 1966). This restorative theory of sleep is widely presumed to be correct and the scientific evidence in support has been marshalled by Oswald (1980).

Body Composition and Aging [PDF]
he changes in composition of the aging T human body is of both gerontologic and geriatric interest and reflects genetic factors and environmental factors such as physical activity, nutrition, and disease, as well as the normal aging processes. In the study of normal aging, that is, aging per se, long-term trends in body compartments are important.

Body Composition of Schizophrenics
Archives of General Psychiatry, 1965MANY INVESTIGATORS have suggested that a relationship exists between body physique and personality or personality disorders such as schizophrenia, depression, and homosexuality. 1-4 The corollary of this notion has been the hypothesis that personality or personality disorders may be involved in the pathogenesis of disease; for example, coronary artery ...

Body mass index has been shown to be an imprecise measurement of fat-free and fat mass, and provides no information if weight changes occur as a result of a decrease in fat-free mass or an increase in fat mass.Non-invasive body composition methods (i.e.

We assessed changes in body composition in 41 young adults who engaged in various exercise and/or training programs on ad libitum diets. Most of those who gained weight sustained an increase in lean body mass (LBM), and most of those who lost weight lost LBM as well as fat.

Pediatrics in Review, 2015
Body fluid composition is maintained in a normal physiologic range by regulatory mechanisms that control sodium and water metabolism. A detailed knowledge of the homeostatic mechanisms will help in understanding the pathogenesis and management of disorders of sodium and water balance. After completing this article, readers should be able to: 1 ...
