Symposium review: The role of adipose tissue in transition dairy cows: Current knowledge and future opportunities*

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2022
: Adipose tissue (AT) is a central reservoir of energy stored in the form of lipids. In addition, AT has been recognized as an immunologically and endocrinologically active tissue of dairy cattle.

What makes a host profitable? Parasites balance host nutritive resources against immunity [PDF]

open access: yes, 2008
Numerous host qualities can modulate parasite fitness, and among these, host nutritive resources and immunity are of prime importance. Indeed, parasite fitness increases with the amount of nutritive resources extracted from the host body and decreases ...

The Impacts of Drought on the Health and Demography of Eastern Grey Kangaroos

open access: yesAnimals, 2022
Extreme climatic events such as droughts and floods are expected to become more intense and severe under climate change, especially in the southern and eastern parts of Australia. We aimed to quantify the relationship between body condition scores (BCS),

Body Condition Assessment Using Digital Images [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2006
This project assessed the ability to assign a body condition score (BCS) to a dairy cow from digital photographs or videos. Images were taken from the rear of the cow at a 0 to 20 degrees angle relative to the tail head. Four observers assigned a BCS to each of 57 cows at a farm visit (live, farm 1) and later from a photograph (photo).

Early maternal experience shapes offspring performance in the wild [PDF]

open access: yes, 2013
Both the environments experienced by a mother as a juvenile and an adult can affect her investment in offspring. However, the implications of these maternal legacies, both juvenile and adult, for offspring fitness in natural populations are unclear.

Can Self-Esteem Protect Against the Deleterious Consequences of Self-Objectification for Mood and Body Satisfaction in Physically Active Female University Students? [PDF]

open access: yes, 2011
Using objectification theory (Fredrickson & Roberts, 1997), this study tested the interaction between self-objectification, appearance evaluation, and self-esteem in predicting body satisfaction and mood states.

Evaluation of Body Weight, Body Condition, and Muscle Condition in Cats with Hyperthyroidism

open access: yesJournal of Veterinary Internal Medicine, 2016
BackgroundThe contribution of fat loss versus muscle wasting to the loss of body weight seen in hyperthyroid cats is unknown.ObjectivesTo investigate body weight, body condition score (BCS), and muscle condition score (MCS) in hyperthyroid cats.AnimalsFour hundred sixty‐two cats with untreated hyperthyroidism, 117 of which were reevaluated after ...

Heritability and Correlations Among Body Condition Score Loss, Body Condition Score, Production and Reproductive Performance [PDF]

open access: yesJournal of Dairy Science, 2002
The objectives of this study were to estimate the heritability of body condition score loss (BCSL) in early lactation and estimate genetic and phenotypic correlations among BCSL, body condition score (BCS), production, and reproductive performance. Body condition scores at calving and postpartum, mature equivalents for milk, fat and protein yield, days
