A revision of body surface area estimations

European Journal of Applied Physiology and Occupational Physiology, 1985
The results from the present study indicate that the equation of Dubois and Dubois (1916), now in common use for estimating body surface area, is not the most accurate of those available. Our new equation is based on the measurement of body weight and upper calf circumference only.

ESTIMATING THE SURFACE AREA OF THE HUMAN BODY

Statistics in Medicine, 1996
A number of formulae have been suggested for estimating the surface area (SA) of a human body from measurements of height H and weight W. Most of these are of the same functional form, namely InSA = a(0) + a1lnH + a2lnW in logarithmic terms, but have quite different values of the coefficients. We show that they are all essentially equivalent in view of

Estimations of body surface area in newborns

Acta Paediatrica, 2008
AbstractAim: To explore the suitability of existing formulas to estimate the body surface area (BSA) of newborns when direct measurement of surface estimation is not practical. Methods: In 589 term‐newborns of normal weight and height, the five estimations (in cm2) were performed using four known BSA formulas by Boyd, Meban, Mosteller and Dubois, and ...

Body surface area in the infant rat

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1975
Body surface area (SA), one index used to minimize size differences in metabolic studies, was estimated by a coating method in rats aged 1, 7, 14, and 21 days (d) (n = 100–107). Body weights (BW) at each age varied about twofold. Regression equations were calculated for SA (cm2) vs. BW (g) (SA = 8.73 + 2.29 BW, 17.79 + 1.71 BW, -4.92 + 2.16 BW, and 53.

Measuring the Surface Area of a Convex Body

The Annals of Mathematics, 1944
In applied sciences it is sometimes desirable to measure the surface area of a small body. It is difficult to do this directly, but if the body is convex we may use a well-known theorem on convex bodies. If K is such a body in threedimensional space, let S be its surface area, A (n) the area of its projection on a plane perpendicular to the vector n ...

Indirect estimation of body surface area and volume

Journal of Applied Physiology, 1959
A convenient and rapid photographic technique of obtaining data which can be used for the calculation of human body surface area is described. The results, which are in good agreement with values obtained by a reliable method of readings from a chart, provide additional support for the application of the increasingly important photographic method of ...

Body height, body mass and surface area of the Neandertals

Zeitschrift für Morphologie und Anthropologie, 1998
Body size, expressed as height or stature, is an important determinant of many other biological variables. Thus, it is surprising that many textbooks portray a wrong picture of Neanderthal height as being "very short" or "just over 5 feet". Based on 45 long bones from maximally 14 males and 7 females, Neanderthals' height averages between 164 and 168 ...
