Abstract The reason for malaria's disappearance from northwestern Europe in the early twentieth century has long been discussed but remains an unresolved conundrum. We investigated the accidental translocation of arthropods with donor material during the establishment of a Sphagnum cultivation site. Although arthropods from 11 different orders were identified in the donor material, only Araneae, Coleoptera, and Hemiptera were found in significant numbers at the recipient site.
