Underwater Hunting in an Arboreal Snake: Predation Notes on Amazonian Frog Larvae

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
We report novel underwater hunting behaviour in a canopy‐dwelling species of snake, the Common Green Racer (Chlorosoma viridissimum). The snake is seen diving and foraging in phytotelmata (water‐filled tree holes), feeding on tadpoles of treefrogs (Trachycephalus resinifictrix, T. hadroceps, and Osteocephalus oophagus). These findings contribute to our

Population dynamics of a long‐lived pitviper inferred from capture–recapture data spanning four decades

open access: yesEcosphere, Volume 17, Issue 3, March 2026.
Abstract Long‐term studies of plant and animal populations are rare, particularly for long‐lived species with slow life histories. However, such studies are necessary to understand how population dynamics are affected by variation in vital rates. We used a large capture–recapture dataset spanning four decades (1983–2019) to estimate several population ...

Divergent Paths, Convergent Heads: Morphological Adaptation of Head Shape to Habitat Use and Diet in Snakes

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 286, Issue 11, November 2025.
Snake head shape is weakly constrained by phylogeny but strongly influenced by ecology. Significant convergence was detected in fossorial and aquatic snakes, while diet mainly drove morphological variation without convergence. ABSTRACT Morphological convergence—where distantly related species evolve similar traits in response to shared ecological ...

Boidae: Your Personal Mining Platform

open access: yesProceedings of the 2024 IEEE/ACM 46th International Conference on Software Engineering: Companion Proceedings
Mining software repositories is a useful technique for researchers and practitioners to see what software developers actually do when developing software. Tools like Boa provide users with the ability to easily mine these open-source software repositories at a very large scale, with datasets containing hundreds of thousands of projects.

Surface Topography and Ultrastructure of the Spectacular Cells in the Eyes of Land and Sea Snakes (Squamata, Reptilia): Functional Adaptations of Micro‐Ornamentation

open access: yesJournal of Morphology, Volume 286, Issue 9, September 2025.
ABSTRACT Although the surface micro‐ornamentation of the scales within the skin of snakes has been the subject of many previous studies, there has been little work done on the spectacle, a protective (keratinised) goggle separated from the underlying cornea by a sub‐spectacular space. The surface ultrastructure of the “Oberhäutchen” of the spectacle is

Corallus caninus (Serpentes, Boidae): a new host for Ophiotaenia sp. (Cestoda, Proteocephalidae) Corallus caninus (Serpente, Boidae): novo hospedeiro de Ophiotaenia sp. (Cestoda, Proteocephalidae)

Trophic Ecology of the Cuban Boa, Chilabothrus angulifer (Boidae)

open access: yesReptiles & Amphibians, 2020
The Cuban Boa (Chilabothrus angulifer) is a top terrestrial predator in Cuba. References to prey species consumed by this boa date to when the first Europeans arrived in the region more than 500 years ago. However, long-term studies on its trophic ecology do not exist.

Effect of Soil Properties on Species Richness of Fossorial Squamate Reptiles

open access: yesJournal of Biogeography, Volume 52, Issue 6, June 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Species richness varies greatly over geographic gradients. Climate and other above‐ground attributes are the most common variables used to explain animal richness patterns. However, soil properties may play an important role in shaping the richness of species living underground.

Biogeographic Implications of Biodiversity Shortfalls in a Mid‐Altitude Desert Ecotone of the Arabian Peninsula

open access: yesDiversity and Distributions, Volume 31, Issue 3, March 2025.
ABSTRACT Aim Macroscale biodiversity inferences are critical for spatial conservation planning, yet they are affected by the limitations of global datasets and the paucity of genetic data. In this study, we conducted a comprehensive sampling campaign and explored how biodiversity shortfalls impact spatial diversity metrics across a mid‐altitude desert ...
