Evolutionary dynamics shape two passive defensive mechanisms in Neotropical snake radiations

open access: yesPhyllomedusa: Journal of Herpetology, 2021
We mapped the distribution of two defensive behaviors (balling and head hiding) of Neotropical snakes to evaluate its distribution in distinct phylogenetic groups. Balling behavior was observed in 58 out of the 167 examined species across seven families.

Sexual maturation in free-ranging Chilabothrus angulifer (Serpentes: Boidae)

open access: yesPhyllomedusa: Journal of Herpetology, 2016
The Cuban Boa (C. angulifer) is the only boid snake in Cuba. It is the largest member of the genus, as well as the largest snake in the West Indies (> 400 cm in snout-vent length); as such, it is an iconic species of the Cuban herpetofauna.

A comparative analysis of female genitalia of seven Old World snakes using a recently proposed technique

open access: yesActa Herpetologica
The diversity of genitalia has long intrigued evolutionary and functional morphology scientists, with a primary focus on male copulatory organs. Despite extensive studies on snake genitalia, particularly hemipenes, female copulatory organs remain ...
