Hybridization and Immunology in Animals: A Review

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 4, April 2026.
Hybridization can reshape immune function by introducing novel genetic variation and combining parental immune traits. Across animal taxa, this process may influence resistance, tolerance, and pathogen dynamics, with important implications for disease ecology and One Health.

Chemical control effectiveness against autumn cutworm and cotton bollworms in the tobacco agrobiocenosis [PDF]

open access: yesE3S Web of Conferences
This article presents data on the chemical control efficacy against the autumn cutworm and cotton bollworm when cultivating the Virginia variety of tobacco under typical gray soil conditions of Urgut district, Samarkand region. Over the years of research,

Molecular mechanisms of sex determination in Lepidoptera: current status and perspectives

open access: yesInsect Science, Volume 33, Issue 2, Page 599-617, April 2026.
The genetic basis of sex determination in Lepidoptera was discovered in 2014 in the silkworm Bombyx mori. In this model species, the W chromosome‐derived small piRNA called Fem piRNA downregulates the expression of a Z‐linked gene, Masculinizer (Masc), which leads to the default female‐specific splicing of the doublesex gene (dsxF) and thus to female ...

Bollworm control with pheromones

open access: yes, 2014
Work at the Central Cotton Research Institute in Pakistan has shown that using sex pheromones to disrupt cotton bollworm mating may offer a non-toxic alternative to chemical control. Three bollworm species, Pectinophora gossypiella, Earias vittella..

DsiRNA‐mediated silencing of Ceratitis capitata transformer or transformer‐2 leads to masculinization of XX embryos and systemic gene silencing in ovaries

open access: yesInsect Science, Volume 33, Issue 2, Page 586-598, April 2026.
We carried out functional studies using Dicer‐substrate small interfering RNAs (DsiRNAs), targeting the sex determination genes Cctransformer (Cctra) and Cctransformer‐2 (Cctra‐2) in the Mediterranean fruit fly (Ceratitis capitata). Microinjection of DsiRNAs into XX embryos (0‐1 h old) rapidly triggered the expression of male‐specific Cctra isoforms ...

Efficacy of bio and synthetic pesticides against the American bollworm and their natural enemies on cotton

open access: yes, 2017
Cotton production in Uganda is limited by various factors among which insects pests are the most important. The key insect pests of cotton are the bollworm complex; spotted bollworm, Earias insulana; pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella and American ...

Electromechanical Microinjection of Pink Bollworm Pectinophora gossypiella Embryos Increases Survival

open access: yes, 1997
We report and compare methods and apparatus for injection of pink bollworm, Pectinophora gossypiella (Saunders), embryos. Injection with an electromechanical device resulted in 59% survival of embryos.

Population assessment of cotton bollworm in relation to pest control practices

open access: yesCalifornia Agriculture, 1967
Long-range studies on cotton bollworm were initiated to develop control recommendations relating damage potential to pest population density, environmental conditions, and the general economics of cotton production.
