Size variation and foraging rate in bumblebees ( Bombus terrestris ) [PDF]
Summary. Size polymorphism is an important life history trait in bumblebees with strong impact on individual behavior and colony organization. Within a colony larger workers tend to serve as foragers, while smaller workers fulfill inhive tasks. It is often assumed that size-dependent division of labor relates to differences in task performance. In this

The behavioural responses of bumblebees Bombus terrestris to simulated rain. [PDF]
Bumblebee activity typically decreases during rainfall, putting them under the threat of the increased frequency of precipitation due to climate change. A novel rain machine was used within a flight arena to observe the behavioural responses of bumblebees ( Bombus terrestris ) to simulated ...

Time‐lapse photography with commercially available trail cameras provides a competitive alternative to direct human observations for documenting pollinator flower visits, but its performance varies between crops. In apple, the cameras recorded more diverse pollinator assemblages than the human observer due to larger temporal coverage of the camera ...

Taxonomic and functional diversity of urban bees of the world
Abstract Bees play a pivotal role in terrestrial environments. Urbanization can affect these organisms and the ecosystem services they provide. However, knowledge of the global diversity of urban bees is limited. Thus, we summarized data on urban bee species identities and occurrences; compared distributions of all bees with those found in urban ...

Application of the fungicide Switch 62.5 WG in garden strawberry (Fragaria × ananassa), targeting Botrytis cinerea, reduced sawfly (Cladius spp.) herbivory by up to 94% and improved fruit quality. This non‐target effect also spilled over to neighbouring untreated plants, lowering damage by 46%.

Bombus terrestris Linnaeus 1758
Bombus terrestris (Linnaeus, 1758) Species almost cosmopolitan, with a distribution that extends from northern Europe to north Africa and from central Asia to the Macaronesia, naturally distributed from 0 to 3000 m (Ornosa & Ortiz-Sánchez 2004). It has become increasingly important commercially for its pollination services to agriculture.

Female Bombus vestalis cuckoo bumblebees were introduced to a flight arena containing four identical opaque boxes, featuring slits to release volatiles from the bumblebees inside. When only one box contained a developing host colony, the cuckoos were able to locate their hosts among the four boxes with 66.2% accuracy.

RNA editing is abundant and correlates with task performance in a social bumblebee
Bumblebee workers are genetically highly similar but they show different behaviors such as brood care and foraging. Here the authors report a high level of ADAR-mediated RNA editing in the bumblebee Bombus terrestris and its weak correlation to task ...

Floral richness drives flower–insect networks in city gardens and allotments
Floral richness was the main driver of flower visits within green spaces whilst green space in the surrounding landscape influenced flower visits by amplifying the effects of floral richness. Native plants received more visits than non‐native plants, although flower visitor richness to non‐native plants increased later in the season as non‐native plant
