Development of a Real-Time PCR Assay for Noninvasive Detection of Miamiensis avidus in Olive Flounder Aquaculture. [PDF]
ABSTRACT Miamiensis avidus (syn. Philasterides dicentrarchi) leads to high mortality and economic losses in olive flounder (Paralichthys olivaceus) aquaculture. In this study, we developed a real‐time PCR assay targeting the cytochrome c oxidase subunit I (cox1) gene of M. avidus to sensitively detect and quantify the parasite in seawater.

Molecular detection and quantification of the protozoan Bonamia ostreae in the flat oyster, Ostrea edulis [PDF]
Bonamia ostreae is an intracellular protozoan which is recognized as a cause of mortality in European populations of flat oysters (Ostrea edulis). Based on the recent characterization of actin genes of B. ostreae, specific primers were designed for real-time PCR using SYBR Green chemistry.

Review of alternatives to antibiotic use in aquaculture
Abstract With the rapid growth of the aquaculture production since the 1980s, there has been a concomitant increase in disease outbreaks. The injudicious and/or incorrect use of antimicrobial agents against diseases of farmed aquatic species poses a considerable threat to the development and growth of a successful and sustainable aquaculture industry ...

Is pallial mucus involved in Ostrea edulis defenses against the parasite Bonamia ostreae? [PDF]
Bonamia ostreae is an intrahemocytic parasite that has been responsible for severe mortalities in the flat oyster Ostrea edulis since the 1970́s. The Pacific oyster Crassostrea gigas is considered to be resistant to the disease and appears to have mechanisms to avoid infection.

Abstract The European native oyster (Ostrea edulis) is a threatened keystone species which historically created extensive, physically complex, biogenic habitats throughout European seas. Overfishing and direct habitat destruction, subsequently compounded by pollution, invasive species, disease, predation and climate change have resulted in the ...

Genetic parallelism between European flat oyster populations at the edge of their natural range
Abstract Although all marine ecosystems have experienced global‐scale losses, oyster reefs have shown the greatest. Therefore, substantial efforts have been dedicated to restoration of such ecosystems during the last two decades. In Europe, several pilot projects for the restoration of the native European flat oyster, Ostrea edulis, recently begun and ...

Chromosome‐level reference genome for European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis L.)
Abstract The European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis L.) is a bivalve naturally distributed across Europe, which was an integral part of human diets for centuries, until anthropogenic activities and disease outbreaks severely reduced wild populations. Despite a growing interest in genetic applications to support population management and aquaculture, a ...

IntroductionThere is no universally appropriate basis for delimiting species in protists, including parasites. Many molecular markers used for species delimitation are part of the ribosomal RNA (rRNA) array, with different regions of the array being used
