Severe apicomplexan infection in the oyster Ostrea chilensis: a possible predisposing factor in bonamiosis [PDF]
Histological examination of 6455 oysters Ostrea chilensis from Foveaux Strait south of New Zealand over a 5 yr period showed >85% contained apicomplexan zoites, irrespective of season. Zoites occurred around the haemolymph sinuses and the digestive diverticulae at all intensities of infection; occurrence in the sub-epithelium, Leydig tissue and gills ...

Abstract The European oyster (Ostrea edulis) is under significant threat across its natural distribution range and even functionally extinct in some regions, such as in the German North Sea. Due to its ecological significance in terms of biodiversity and other ecosystem services, the species, and the habitat it provides, are defined as highly ...

Role of microRNAs in the immunity process of the flat oyster Ostrea edulis against bonamiosis
MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small (∼22nt) non-coding regulatory single strand RNA molecules that reduce stability and/or translation of sequence-complementary target. miRNAs are a key component of gene regulatory networks and have been involved in a wide variety of biological processes, such as signal transduction, cell proliferation and apoptosis.

Forty questions of importance to the policy and practice of native oyster reef restoration in Europe
Abstract Oyster reefs are among the most threatened marine habitats globally. In Europe, oyster reefs have been extirpated from most locations within their historical range. Active restoration of the native oyster (Ostrea edulis) in Europe has grown substantially in recent years.

Long-term affected flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) haemocytes show differential gene expression profiles from naïve oysters in response to Bonamia ostreae [PDF]
European flat oyster (Ostrea edulis) production has suffered a severe decline due to bonamiosis. The responsible parasite enters in oyster haemocytes, causing an acute inflammatory response frequently leading to death.

Environmental DNA and RNA was used to detect a fish pathogen from water samples. The pathogen could be detected days before fish showed clinical signs of disease and mortality. Abstract Aquaculture industries face challenges in fish production, primarily due to disease occurrence.

Achieving conservation and restoration outcomes through ecologically beneficial aquaculture
Abstract A range of conservation and restoration tools are needed to safeguard the structure and function of aquatic ecosystems. Aquaculture, the culturing of aquatic organisms, often contributes to the numerous stressors that aquatic ecosystems face, yet some aquaculture activities can also deliver ecological benefits.

QTL mapping for resistance to bonamiosis in the European flat oyster Ostrea edulis [PDF]
A breeding programme has been undertaken by Ifremer to produce selected Ostrea edulis families which are resistant to Bonamia ostreae, a parasite which is the most significant constraint on aquaculture of this oyster. Using such families, we aimed to identify Quantitative Trait Loci (QTLs) of resistance/susceptibility to bonamiosis.

Oyster fanning represents a significant economic part of the French aquaculture production. This production is approximately about 150 000 tons of shells a year [Buestel, 2004].

Bivalve diseases (Mollusca, Bivalvia) [PDF]
