An Overview of Bone Cement Compositions used in Vertebroplasty and Their Viability in Clinical Settings

open access: yesInternational Journal of Engineering Materials and Manufacture
Vertebroplasty is a minimally invasive surgical procedure wherein a particular composition of bone cement is injected into a fractured vertebra in an attempt to restore joint mobility and reduce perceived pain.

Novel Tuning of PMMA Orthopedic Bone Cement Using TBB Initiator: Effect of Bone Cement Extracts on Bioactivity of Osteoblasts and Osteoclasts

open access: yesCells, 2022
Bone cement containing benzoyl peroxide (BPO) as a polymerization initiator are commonly used to fix orthopedic metal implants. However, toxic complications caused by bone cement are a clinically significant problem.

Antimicrobial activity of bone cements embedded with organic nanoparticles

open access: yesInternational Journal of Nanomedicine, 2015
Infections after orthopedic surgery are a very unwelcome outcome; despite the widespread use of antibiotics, their incidence can be as high as 10%. This risk is likely to increase as antibiotics are gradually losing efficacy as a result of bacterial ...

Functional Biomaterials Derived from Protein Liquid–Liquid Phase Separation and Liquid‐to‐Solid Transition

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
Protein can undergo liquid–liquid phase separation and liquid‐to‐solid transition to form liquid condensates and solid aggregates. These phase transitions can be influenced by post‐translational modifications, mutations, and various environmental factors.

Interfacial Load Monitoring and Failure Detection in Total Joint Replacements via Piezoresistive Bone Cement and Electrical Impedance Tomography [PDF]

open access: yes, 2019
Aseptic loosening, or loss of implant fixation, is a common complication following total joint replacement. Revision surgeries cost the healthcare system over $8 billion annually in the US. Despite the prevalence of aseptic loosening, timely and accurate detection remains a challenge because traditional imaging modalities such as plain radiographs ...

Patient-specific virtual spine straightening and vertebra inpainting: An automatic framework for osteoplasty planning [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2021
Symptomatic spinal vertebral compression fractures (VCFs) often require osteoplasty treatment. A cement-like material is injected into the bone to stabilize the fracture, restore the vertebral body height and alleviate pain. Leakage is a common complication and may occur due to too much cement being injected.

The effect of unsaturated fatty acid and triglyceride oil addition on the mechanical and antibacterial properties of acrylic bone cements

open access: yesJournal of Biomaterials Applications, 2015
Acrylic bone cements have an elastic modulus several times higher than the surrounding trabecular bone. This has been hypothesized to contribute to certain clinical complications.

Thermal Processing Creates Water‐Stable PEDOT:PSS Films for Bioelectronics

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, Volume 37, Issue 13, April 2, 2025.
Instead of using chemical cross–linkers, it is shown that PEDOT:PSS thin films for bioelectronics become water‐stable after a simple heat treatment. The heat treatment is compatible with a range of rigid and elastomeric substrates and films are stable in vivo for >20 days.
