The changing rule of human bone density with aging based on a novel definition and mensuration of bone density with computed tomography [PDF]

open access: yesarXiv, 2023
Osteoporosis and fragility fractures have emerged as major public health concerns in an aging population. However, measuring age-related changes in bone density using dual-energy X-ray absorptiometry has limited personalized risk assessment due to susceptibility to interference from various factors.

Antifracture efficacy of antiresorptive agents are related to changes in bone density.

open access: yesJournal of Clinical Endocrinology and Metabolism, 2000
There is a current debate about the extent to which antifracture efficacy of antiresorptive drugs are related to changes in bone mineral density (BMD). In vitro studies show that most of the variability in bone strength is related to BMD, and prospective

Optimal surgical care for adolescent idiopathic scoliosis: an international consensus [PDF]

open access: yes, 2014
Purpose The surgical management of adolescent idiopathic scoliosis (AIS) has seen many developments in the last two decades. Little high-level evidence is available to support these changes and guide treatment.

In vivo impact on rabbit subchondral bone of viscosupplementation with a hyaluronic acid antioxidant conjugate [PDF]

open access: yes, 2023
This study aimed to assess the effects of an antioxidant-conjugated Hyaluronic Acid (HA), specifically HA-4-aminoresorcinol (HA4AR), on articular cartilage and subchondral bone in osteoarthritis (OA). We conducted a comparative analysis between HA4AR and a commercially available high molecular weight HA formulation in a rabbit model of OA.

Computer simulation of glioma growth and morphology [PDF]

open access: yes, 2007
Despite major advances in the study of glioma, the quantitative links between intra-tumor molecular/cellular properties, clinically observable properties such as morphology, and critical tumor behaviors such as growth and invasiveness remain unclear ...

Inhibition of acyl‐CoA synthetase long‐chain isozymes decreases multiple myeloma cell proliferation and causes mitochondrial dysfunction

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Triacsin C inhibition of the acyl‐CoA synthetase long chain (ACSL) family decreases multiple myeloma cell survival, proliferation, mitochondrial respiration, and membrane potential. Made with Biorender.com. Multiple myeloma (MM) is an incurable cancer of plasma cells with a 5‐year survival rate of 59%.

Inhibitor of DNA binding‐1 is a key regulator of cancer cell vasculogenic mimicry

open access: yesMolecular Oncology, EarlyView.
Elevated expression of transcriptional regulator inhibitor of DNA binding 1 (ID1) promoted cancer cell‐mediated vasculogenic mimicry (VM) through regulation of pro‐angiogenic and pro‐cancerous genes (e.g. VE‐cadherin (CDH5), TIE2, MMP9, DKK1). Higher ID1 expression also increased metastases to the lung and the liver.

A Bio‐Inspired Perspective on Materials Sustainability

open access: yesAdvanced Materials, EarlyView.
This perspective discusses natural materials as inspiration for sustainable engineering designs and the processing of materials. First, circularity, longevity, parsimony, and activity are presented as essential material paradigms. The perspective then uses many examples of natural and technical materials to introduce principles such as oligo ...

Dental implants in oral rehabilitation after denosumab and bisphosphonate-related osteonecrosis of the jaw in a young patient: an unusual case

open access: yesJournal of Oral Medicine and Oral Surgery
Patients often request oral rehabilitation after surgical resection. Here, a 19-year-old patient developed medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw after treatment with antiresorptive therapy.
