Bone health is critical to overall health and quality of life. Although genetic factors play a key role in bone formation, there are several external factors that can be modified to preserve bone health. Diet, exercise, menstrual irregularities, medications, disease states, weight, and environmental factors can all affect fracture risk. Osteoporosis is

Good bone health is important to everyone, regardless of age. Osteoporosis is a preventable disease, and steps for increasing bone mass should begin at an early age. To increase bone mass, much of the recent evidence suggests that the best time for intervention with calcium or exercise may be during the prepubertal years.

Low bone mass in the skeleton, which increases the risk of osteoporotic fracture, also may be associated with periodontal bone loss and tooth loss. Osteoporosis and periodontal disease share several common risk factors, including older age, smoking and perhaps insufficient dietary intakes of calcium and vitamin D.Research supports the idea that ...

Osteoporosis occurs during childhood and adolescence as a heritable condition such as OI, with acquired disease (eg, IBD), or iatrogenically as a result of high-dose glucocorticoid therapy. However, the number of children affected by osteoporosis during youth is small compared to the numbers who will develop osteoporosis in adulthood.

The increasing prevalence of diabetes especially type 2 diabetes worldwide is indisputable. Diabetics suffer increased morbidity and mortality, compared to their non-diabetic counterparts, not only because of vascular complications, but also because of an increased fracture incidence.

Osteoporosis is one of the most common metabolic bone diseases in the adult population and its prevalence will continue to rise as our population grows older. In both sexes, hypogonadism is associated with accelerated loss of bone and development of osteoporosis. Adrenal and gonadal androgen levels decline with advancing age in both sexes.

Skeletal fragility is a complication of acromegaly closely related to hypersecretion of growth hormone (GH) and insulin-like growth factor-1. In this condition, altered-bone remodeling causes deterioration of bone microstructure and impairment of bone strength, resulting in a high risk of vertebral fractures.

High bone density and bone health
Endocrinología y Nutrición (English Edition), 2012The aim of this paper is to review the main aspects related to high bone density (HBD) as well as to discuss the physiologic mechanisms involved in bone health. There are still no well-defined criteria for identification of individuals with HBD and there are few studies on the topic.
