Bone metabolism in galactosemia

Bone, 2004
Classical galactosemia is an autosomal recessively inherited disorder of galactose metabolism. Treatment consists of life-long dietary restriction of galactose. Despite treatment, long-term complications occur such as a decreased bone mineral density (BMD).

MicroRNAs regulate bone metabolism

Journal of Bone and Mineral Metabolism, 2013
Osteoporosis is caused by an unbalance between bone formation and bone resorption. Bone homeostasis is regulated by intricate mechanisms. Recently, a novel class of regulatory factors termed microRNAs (miRNAs) has been found to play a crucial role in cell cycle control, apoptosis and other cellular processes including metabolism and differentiation ...

Diabetes and bone metabolism

Orvosi Hetilap, 2011
In the past decade several novel findings point to the critical role of the skeleton in several homeostatic processes, including energy balance. The connection begins in the bone marrow with lineage allocation of mesenchymal stem cells to adipocytes or osteoblasts. Osteoblasts and adipocytes produce factors affecting insulin homeostasis.

Bone metabolism during pregnancy

Annales d'Endocrinologie, 2016
During pregnancy, mineral concentrations, of calcium and phosphorus in particular, are maintained at a high level in fetal blood so that the developing skeleton may accrete adequate mineral content. The placenta actively transports minerals for this purpose.

Androgens and bone metabolism

Joint Bone Spine, 2005
The gradual reductions in bone mass and skeletal calcium density seen throughout adulthood occur in parallel with changes in the production of bioactive sex hormones in both men and women. The long-held belief that osteoporosis is dependent on androgens in men and estrogens in women has been challenged by recent reports of osteoporosis in young men ...
