Ostensive communication in great apes: The evolution of Gricean intent

open access: yesMind &Language, EarlyView.
I discuss the evolution of ostensive behaviours (behaviours that display the communicative intent to influence others through the perception of signals and actions addressed to them). Ostensive communication evolved out of evolutionary adaptations to the challenges and opportunities created by the evolutionary scenario of the meeting of ...

Spatial Reference in a Bonobo Gesture [PDF]

open access: yesCurrent Biology, 2014
Great apes frequently produce gestures during social interactions to communicate in flexible, goal-directed ways [1-3], a feature with considerable relevance for the ongoing debate over the evolutionary origins of human language [1, 4]. But despite this shared feature with language, there has been a lack of evidence for semantic content in ape gestures.

Rupture in long-term vocal recognition of past social partners in bonobos

open access: yesRevue de Primatologie, 2015
Bonobos live in dense forest habitats where visual communication is often limited rendering vocal signals important to regulate their social interactions.

The Steady State Great Ape? Long Term Isotopic Records Reveal the Effects of Season, Social Rank and Reproductive Status on Bonobo Feeding Behavior. [PDF]

open access: yesPLoS ONE, 2016
Dietary ecology of extant great apes is known to respond to environmental conditions such as climate and food availability, but also to vary depending on social status and life history characteristics.

The Sounds of Trust: The Bouba–Kiki Effect in Political Leaders' Names

open access: yesKyklos, Volume 79, Issue 4, Page 955-978, November 2026.
ABSTRACT Prior research has found evidence for the bouba–kiki effect according to which individuals associate sounds related to “bouba” and “kiki” with shapes and feelings. Using individual data from the World Values Survey, we investigate whether political leaders with names that sound “bouba” or “kiki” are associated with higher or lower trust.

Etude préliminaire de l'influence des disponibilités alimentaires et des activités humaines sur l’utilisation spatiale de l’habitat par les chimpanzés et les bonobos

open access: yesRevue de Primatologie, 2012
Great apes are endangered due to poaching, deforestation, habitat loss and habitat fragmentation. Studying the interactions between great apes, their environment and local population is necessary for understanding the adaptability of great apes to ...

Utterance evolution: the road to generative, combinatorial communicators

open access: yesBiological Reviews, Volume 101, Issue 5, Page 2427-2447, October 2026.
ABSTRACT Language has long been considered uniquely complex in the animal kingdom; however, animal research over the last decade has begun to challenge some long‐standing premises about exactly which language capacities are uniquely human. The task of resolving why and how complex communication systems evolve, particularly human language, has ...

Sociability Under Anthropogenic Change: From Individual Behaviour to Population‐Level Consequences

open access: yesEcology and Evolution, Volume 16, Issue 10, October 2026.
Our review synthesises empirical and theoretical research on how anthropogenic environmental change reshapes animal social behaviour from individuals to populations. We use sociability as an individual‐level lens, distinguishing context‐dependent expression from repeatable interindividual differences and linking both to social relationships, network ...
