The Future of Research in Cognitive Robotics: Foundation Models or Developmental Cognitive Models?
Research in cognitive robotics founded on principles of developmental psychology and enactive cognitive science would yield what we seek in autonomous robots: the ability to perceive its environment, learn from experience, anticipate the outcome of events, act to pursue goals, and adapt to changing circumstances without resorting to training with ...

An integrated approach combining mass spectrometry imaging, transcriptomics, and phylogenetic analysis facilitated the efficient identification of genes involved in gallotannin biosynthesis in Paeonia suffruticosa. As a result, a key UGT and several SCPL acyltransferases responsible for biosynthesizing pentagalloylglucose were successfully identified ...

Evaluation of design flood estimates – a case study for Norway
The aim of this study was to evaluate the predictive fit of probability distributions to annual maximum flood data, and in particular to evaluate (1) which combination of distribution and estimation method gives the best fit and (2) whether the answer to

Bootstrapping word alignment via word packing [PDF]
We introduce a simple method to pack words for statistical word alignment. Our goal is to simplify the task of automatic word alignment by packing several consecutive words together when we believe they correspond to a single word in the opposite ...

This study generates high‐fidelity synthetic longitudinal records for a million‐patient diabetes cohort, successfully replicating clinical predictive performance. However, deeper analysis reveals algorithmic biases and trajectory inconsistencies that escape standard quality metrics. These findings challenge current validation norms, demonstrating why a

A Scalable Framework for Comprehensive Typing of Polymorphic Immune Genes from Long‐Read Data
SpecImmune introduces a unified computational framework optimized for long‐read sequencing to resolve over 400 highly polymorphic immune genes. This scalable approach achieves high‐resolution typing, enabling the discovery of cross‐family co‐evolutionary networks and population‐specific diversity.

Optimal Grazing Exclusion Duration to Enhance Soil Carbon Sequestration in Degraded Grasslands
Across China, grazing exclusion reaches the national mean soil organic carbon recovery benchmark sooner in high‐MAP regions (> 500 mm), but recovery is much slower where MAP < 300 mm. Scaling this strategy to 70% of China's degraded grasslands would sequester about 1.52 Pg of soil carbon over 10 years—roughly 17% of annual global fossil‐fuel emissions.

You Only Look Once v5 and Multi-Template Matching for Small-Crack Defect Detection on Metal Surfaces
This paper compares the performance of Deep Learning (DL) and multi-template matching (MTM) models for detecting small defects. DL models extract distinguishing features of objects but require a large dataset of images.
